You think he’s on top of his game tonight ?
No reason to think he isn't.

Is it that they will lose money or just not make money? If the game isn't played they don't have to pay for the tickets, do they?

What's the difference? If there is an implicit large swing to the broker's profits between an Astros win and loss tonight, it's a strong candidate for hedging via a bet for tonight.

Not at all. To be clear, I'm asking what's the difference in regard to the motivation to hedge by betting Astros in game 6.

They are in a risky business. If you want to hedge choose another line of work.  :)
Aren't they already hedged by not having to pay for the tickets if there is no game 7?

Talk about the market crashing at gametime:

Wow!
Didn't I explain this last year?  :)
Only people paying high prices would be Houston fans. LA is dumping their tickets add will buy tomorrow in it happens.

You're thinking of hedging against loss. That's not what this would be. This is hedging a large potential profit in such a way that turns it into a smaller, guaranteed profit. If you're running a business (which ticket brokering certainly is), you absolutely want to engage in this kind of hedging when the math works out.

Thanks for the explanation as I had no idea what hedging is.  :)
It costs to hedge. If they are in it for the long run you don't worry about this.

Of course it costs money to hedge. It always costs money to hedge. All you've said is they shouldn't do it. You haven't bothered to explain why not.

If you assume the betting line is a good stand in for the actual probability of a game 7, then this is actually a very low cost way to hedge. There are unlimited examples of businesses engaging in equivalent hedging behaviors.

It will even itself out and you will end up with more profits by saving what it costs you to hedge.

Even itself out how? If you're an LA area (or any other specific area - I don't think any of these brokers are national) ticket broker, you don't have unlimited playoff (and certainly not WS) series to have this scenario play out often enough for 'evening out'.

I can call any big broker here in ORD and get tickets for any event.

Are they all buying tickets/rights for every playoff series in every city? Or do they go out and get from brokers in the home city as needed?

Truth is though that even if it's the former, there aren't enough of these scenarios across all major sports each year to make it even out to the extent where the only difference is hedge costs.

My guess is they have deals with each other.
