It's been flat for the past five years but overall, it has lengthened substantially over time.  Seems like the big culprit is the number of pitchers used per game per team.  So much more specialization among pitchers.  Can't find number of pitches per plate appearance over this period of time.  It has risen slightly over the past 20 years from 3.74 in 1999 to 3.90 in 2018.

1970 - 2:32 length, 2.66 pitchers per game per team
1980 - 2:33, 2.56
1990 - 2:51, 3.02
2000 - 3:01, 3.54
2010 - 2:54, 3.87
2013 - 3:04, 3.95
2018 - 3:04, 4.36

Where did you get this from? Curios to see if  2000 was the anomaly or 2010 was.

My grandfather often talks about is seems like MLB games have doubled in length from his childhood in the 40s.
I can only vouch for the 60s but I would agree with him.

Length of game times trended up until 2000 and that was a high water mark and trended down until 2006 and started coming back up again over the past ten years.   Data shows runs per game peaked in 2000 so that seems to be the reason for the uptick in game time.  We were in the steroid era etc.  Barry Bonds broke the HR record and had one of the greatest seasons ever in 2001.  Sosa had his best years 98-01.

You think we will ever see a pitcher with 10+ complete games in a season again?

SAD!

I agree that its not the same as it used to be but if you look at the numbers then it makes sense.

saber metrics shows you how this maximizes your chances at winning

same thing with the shift and only trying to hit homeruns
it all comes down to the numbers

What numbers make sense? Have someone start the game and pitch to one batter? These managers are trying to act like they are geniuses and end up looking like fools.

What do you prefer to see, pitchers throwing more innings or better pitches?

if they would have won that game then he would be considered a genius

the numbers show that different pitchers pitch better to different batters
same thing with most starters not seeing the lineup a third time because the numbers show that is when pitchers get hit

As a Met fan, I probably watched the shortest games on average the past few years being that pitching is dominant and offense is almost non existent... fewer pitching changes and in general shorter innings on both sides of the plate.

They keep on surprising with new and improved ways too lose. Start season with 11-1 and then lose. That was a nice #mets

If he doesn't win in 2019 he will be available.
