Travelling with an infant on an award or paid ticket
« on: July 15, 2010, 12:19:54 PM »
It used to be common knowledge that an infant in lap was always free. However recently I have heard, (and confirmed on Delta) that an infant in lap, at least in F/C, can cost a few hundred dollars. I've heard anywhere from $200 to 20% of the would-be fare, which on a $4,500 F/C ticket booked with miles, 20% is $900.

Can anyone state their experience with IiL (Infants in Laps - my own term)?
-Eli

On my 125K US booked mileage ticket I added an infant in a failed attempt to extend the hold.
I was told the taxes would be 10% of the paid $17,500 fare, so about $1,750.

Always free domestically.

In business, on LH and LX we paid about $560 RT for ORD-TLV.

Flying RT ORD-YOW on AC using ANA miles it was $13 in coach

Us airways 10% of the officially paid fare
Miles and more only airport tax
Air canada 100 dollars flat fee
Bmi only tax

If you fly f or business and have to pay 10% it can be very expensive. So you should calculate this in advance if flying with a inf. what miles to use

On Elal they forced us to pay 10% of a full fare one way business class $350. I had biz one way tickets through AA mileage. On the way back I found someone in coach on my flight and added the baby to their reservation and only paid 10% of that $90.

Thats a good idea that can end up really bad. If you have a FA thats exact, he will see that you have no infant that should sit in your lap, as its not added to you. Why would they let him "scream" in business class then? They could demand that the baby fly in coach with the other people. Not a geshmake situation

Do you not get some sort of ticket or at least a receipt for the infant?

That would be worse as it says that the baby doesn't belong in business.

I got a separate ticket for the baby. It really worked out well because there were no basinets left in coach but they gave the basinet in business.

I don't think they care once there's a ticket for the infant.  It's not like the baby is taking up a seat or eating a meal.

If a passenger complained and the FA saw that the baby was booked in Economy, they would probably make them take the baby out of business

I can't imagine once the baby's on board they would force it not to sit with the parents. Think of the PR nightmare. They would be pissed, but they're not gonna separate a baby from the parents

Well by check in the problem starts, since the other family will have to check ur kid in. When sitiing down, they count all passengers. They will realize that kid does not belong there with you. So they might not make a scene, but they will realize what you did. So a chillul hashem is prebooked. All to save 200 dollars? I dont know?!
