United Club ?
« on: May 26, 2013, 10:49:26 AM »
My United Club card is coming up to the end of year when they will charge me $395 yearly fee. Anyone here have experience with calling them and having them wave the fee for second year?
thanks

Was the club card worth it for you? Is the annual fee cost make it that more valuable then the explorer card?

First year was free, so it was certainly worth it. But at $395 it is not a card I would keep. (Even at $95 I have doubts: Their lounges that I have been too were very minimal. The times I needed it most, a few weeks after receiving the card, on a trip to Asia, despite the card I was allowed entry without the Club Card which I didn't know about and didn't arrive for month after the credit card.)

Call them, see what they say.  If the answer isn't good, call and let them know you're considering cancelling the card and ask for a retention bonus.  If that doesn't go well, perhaps you're in the mood for a 2BM/3BM and use the Club Card as leverage in case you get denied on one of the other cards you apply for.

I have tried hard but they offer very little, maybe $100, it seems easier to get a retention on the explorer. they feel the club benefit outweighs the cost.

Once you cancel the Cub card, UA is notified shortly after and your Club card no longer works, because when you swipe the Club card it is checked against a master list.

Retention bonuses have ranged from non to $150 statement credit or 15k miles.  They will not waive the fee a 2nd year.

Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.
