MCT is 2 hours, so that should be enough time.
Thank you. We'll go for it!

PEK is far more interesting than HKG. If spending more time in one city, it should be PEK

Maybe, but PEK is super trafficy, even in the winter.

There's probably less traffic in his hometown too. Hes going to the Far East. To me it's a no brainer to spend more time in PEK than in HKG.
And I actually like HKG, been there thrice.

True, there may be more tourist attractions to do in PEK in the winter than in HKG, I'm just mentioning both and letting him decide. Often times it's really cold and snowy in PEK and he may want a warmer destination, making HKG the way to go.

I love the different opinions.  Thank you.
I hadn't really thought about weather, but it being January, and coming from BOS, yes, warmer sounds better.
With our current itinerary, we are spending five nights in HKG and 2 nights in PEK, but the tourist time is not really so heavily weighted toward HKG.
For me, if I see The Great Wall, The Forbidden City and Tianenman Square, I'll be satisfied with PEK.

All your PEK items of interest can be covered on a one day tour. Other items like markets, etc. can be done on the half days. See my TR for which tour I used. FWIW I also went at the end of January.

Agree that PEK > HKG in terms of time.

I wouldn't spend more than 2-3 days in HKG and could easily do 4-5 in PEK.

I would recommend staying the bare minimum in HKG, and doing a stop in either Xian to see the Terracotta Warriors or in Chengdu to see the pandas. Both of those options do not require a night.

Either way, use Ctrip for booking intra China flights. Much cheaper than the regular OTA's

Getting the feeling of FOMO if we don't see the Terra-cotta warriors

Here's an updated itinerary, changes bolded:

BOS-YYZ-PEK, arriving Wednesday 5pm
PEK-XIY, Wednesday night
XIY-HKG Thursday afternoon
In HKG 4 nights (Thurs night through Monday morning).
HKG-PEK, Monday morning
In PEK 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday)
PEK-YYZ-BOS, departing Wednesday 7pm

Question: Is half a day long enough in XIY to see the TerraCotta Warriors?

I hear the not missing out on the Terracotta Warriors, but you will also be quite tired by the time you get there, so you may not be in the mood of going out to see them and then heading straight back to the airport for another flight. Just something to keep in mind.

The itin you posted gives you a night in XIY. You should have no tired issues then on Thursday. And yes, should be enough time

Looks great, only shame is that you'll need to buy a visa.

72-hour rule doesn't apply?

Nope, needs to be direct into China and out of China.
PEK-XIY invalidates that unless you connect outside of China to get there.
