+1, not to mention traffic in the city. The wall at Mutanyu is closer to the airport than the city itself (city-------->airport---------->wall at Mutanyu), so it's easier to to just to the wall. Just find a private guide who will pick you up and take you there. Going into the city can take a long time because of traffic.
Just the wall will fill up 12hrs?
I land at 4am and my flight out is at 5.

Probably not, but just depends on what you want to see, but the wall plus the city is hard to do all in one day and to get back to the airport in time for an international flight. A few other great sights are the forbidden city, temple of heaven, tianamen square, or go to the markets for shopping for knock offs. Up to you how to prioritize.

Check out my trip report, but i would not attempt to fit too much in, the first class lounge for china is very nice.  Can do an authentic tea ceremony there.  https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=95279.0

It won't fill up the entire 12 hours, but you will be left with a very small amount of time to see the city. If your flight out is at 5 p.m., you need to be at the airport at 3 p.m. I know it sounds like a lot of time ahead of your flight, but the immigration lines and to leave the country can be quite long and they move very slowly. There are also no cues for premium passengers. Like the previous poster mentioned, there are other towards you that you can do in Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The tutor I did started there and then went to the wall, and the whole thing took from approximately 6 a.m. pickup at the airport until 6 p.m. drop off at my hotel. If you got a private guide, you can certainly do it a lot quicker, but I would do it in that order. First the Forbidden City in Tiananmen Square and then the wall. The main reason is is that traffic going into the city is going to be a lot worse later in the day. At 4 a.m. it shouldn't be that bad. Plus since the wall is close to the airport, they can just drop you back off at the airport instead of going all the way into the city.

I would agree with yehoshua's idea of doing tianamen and forbidden city first, but you will need to hire a private guide with a car for all of this or it wont work.  Also make sure that those locations are actually open on those days and times.  With a private guide you usually also get to skip the lines and security checks that take a long time to get in to those areas.  If you want to see chairman Mao in his tomb you will have to wait on line for that otherwise tianamen square is just a like it sounds a big square with lots of "secret" police.  Forbidden city can take a very short or long amount of time depending on how quickly you move, in general once you've seen the outside of one building you've seen them all so easy to move quickly through forbidden city.  It should take about 90 minutes to 2.5 hrs to get to the wall depending on which part you go to.  The farther one is better but takes a lot more time.

Yes. You're traveling within China. If you arrived in either city and left from the same city, then no.

Visas for Americans are more expensive than for Israelis and I think also Europeans. If your a dual citizen check the options.

Do I need an invitation or similar? Or hotel and flight reservations are sufficient?

Yes, you need a visa before getting to China. No invitation necessary. Just look on the conaolate's website for what you'll need.
