Yes. You're traveling within China. If you arrived in either city and left from the same city, then no.

Visas for Americans are more expensive than for Israelis and I think also Europeans. If your a dual citizen check the options.

Will get a visa in NYC
Do I need an invitation or similar? Or hotel and flight reservations are sufficient?

Yes, you need a visa before getting to China. No invitation necessary. Just look on the conaolate's website for what you'll need.

We stayed in a couple of airbnbs. did not have an issue with making reservations but did have some difficulties later with communication as none of the hosts spoke English.

There are very beautiful hotels right near the chabad if you are hoping to spend shabbas by them.  The NUO hotel is amazing and very inexpensive.

Landing at 1:35 at PEK. Is 2 hours enough time to make a connection?

I'm not sure if they have a sterile transit. If they do, it's enough time. If they don't it's not enough time.

+1
I suppose it depends on the connection — if same airline and staying within China, maybe fine.   But transiting internationally doubt you will make it.  We flew YYZ-PEK on AC and had a 3+ hour connection to CX to HKG and missed it due to immigration delays.

I have a 5 hour stop at the airport. Will I make it to chabad, get lunch, and make it back?

Not a chance. It'll take you 30-60 minutes to get outside the airport, at least an hour to drive each way, then 60-90 minutes to go through customs on your way out. All that for just a lunch? Not with it IMO.

I hear. What about getting food delivery to the airport?

Can I bring in raw meat and chicken in?

I don't know if they will do that, but you'd still need to exit customs to pick up the food which may not be worth it.
