My FFB black hater yeshivish cousin teaches in some Chassidish schools and loves to tell me the stories of how the kids ask him if he's frum because he has a closely shaved face beard or doesn't wear a beketche. 

My grandparents used to live in Monsey/Spring Valley. One of the reasons they left was the neighborhood was gradually becoming chassidish. My grandmother loves to tell the story of when she went over to tell off a little chassidish kid - in English - for some misdeed. And the kid responds - in Yiddish of course - why are you speaking goyish? Are you a goy?

I see where you're going with that but I have to disagree. It's often the same closed-mindedness that causes kids to leave in both the Chassidish and Litvish worlds. Take this one for example.

It's one thing to leave (unfortunately), but another to do it in the way that she chose.  Even if she doesn't believe in religion/G-d, humiliation to the family does not rack up points in the secular world either.

Finally...a gemora kup...thats exactly what I've been saying all along. He didnt have the tools to deal with his uncertainty and he chose the easy way out. I've been around enough athiests to know what I'm looking at. I dont judge him...and i dont want to be mekarev him either. Either he comes to the realization that his choices alone are what took him there and nothing anyone else did or could make him become that or he wont. Its a big boy/girl  admission that we must all make that we are the product of our choices. Everyone has a choice to make.

Out of a class of 25 boys in my yeshiva days we have chasidim, litvaks, tuna beigel types (although I'm a dinosaur ) and 1 OTD. He experienced the same or similar childhood experiences that we did. Why is he OTD...because thats a choice he made. Period.
