So they called it something else in your day. They had these guys back in the shtetl. The term is new, the metzius is not.

In the shtetl they were Zionists, Communists, Socialists, Anarchists, etc. At least they had a cause, now theyre just lost causes. The metzius of a Tuna Beigel is not the same. I think we need to start a thread to define what a Tuna Beigel really is.

It's a "Peilisher" thing. In Lubavitch we call it something else. I just have to figure out what it is.

The origin is that the guy looks "modern" but then goes into Dunkin Donuts and orders the tuna bAIgel (with a Peilisher tzairai.)

you know why they call it a Tuna Beigel? because he looks all smooth on the outside, but is very fishy on the inside.

I'm not familiar with a Lubavitcher "term" for this but I'm assuming it's something like the story where the Rebbe Rashab told a certain Maskil what his Mohel did with his Orloh?

Yes. Basically, you can run but you can't hide.
But a tuna beigel is nominally frum. He lives within the frum community. Remember the sheitel couple on Judge Judy? The guy was sort of a tuna beigel.

Reminds me of a story my Mashpia would say by Farbrengens.

2 Bochurim from a certain Yeshivah who got caught up in Haskalah decided to make it "official" by going to the bar Yom Kippur and have a beer. They come in, sit down, order a pint each and the first one picks it up and instinctively starts muttering "Boruch Ato Ado-noi...". His horrified friend starts screaming "Yankel what are you doing? we're Oifgeklert now!", Yankel turns red and mutters under his breath "Oy! Lamdeini Chukecha..."

PWAAA! Who said that one?

It also reminds me of the meshumad r"l who becomes a galach. After his first day on the job, the monsignor says, "Father Goldstein, you did an excellent job, but I recommend that next time you do not open your sermon with, "Fellow goyim...'"

FTFY
Dear, sweet, hvaces42, I was talking to Achas v'Achas and in Lubavitch parlance (as condescending and culturally insensitive as this is) we refer to ALL chasEEdisher as Peilisher (with a cheilem.) Achas knew exactly what I meant.  :)

Finally...a gemora kup...thats exactly what I've been saying all along. He didnt have the tools to deal with his uncertainty and he chose the easy way out. I've been around enough athiests to know what I'm looking at. I dont judge him...and i dont want to be mekarev him either. Either he comes to the realization that his choices alone are what took him there and nothing anyone else did or could make him become that or he wont. Its a big boy/girl  admission that we must all make that we are the product of our choices. Everyone has a choice to make.

Out of a class of 25 boys in my yeshiva days we have chasidim, litvaks, tuna beigel types (although I'm a dinosaur ) and 1 OTD. He experienced the same or similar childhood experiences that we did. Why is he OTD...because thats a choice he made. Period.
+1 I definitely agree

Can you link the clip I would love to see it

My Dearest Sweetest Freddie (Amush):

As condescending and culturally insensitive as you believe you were, your assumptions about my knowledge and understanding of Lubavitch parlance are indeed misguided. Having spent the better part of 7 summers (as an adult) in an original Lubavitcher summer camp and having a DW who works in Ir Hakodesh v'hamechuzeh CH...I am well versed in what you freaking meant!!!

You and your cheilem (rhymes with gaylem) friend arent speaking in some code to a non-believer. (i.e. The Rebbe KM is not in Queens, he's in Krinsky's basement...Shhh dont tell anyone.)

That being said I stand behind my FTFY. Tuna Beigel's (rhymes with Faygels) are more of the Hungarian variety of Peilisher, then actual Peilisher Chasidim.

With much Ahavas Yisrael (because thats all the Rebbe wanted anyway) I remain,

Huh? Have you read her book?
No, I did not read her book.  I don't even know any details, only the picture that I saw.  I see upthread that she went through something horrific and obviously emotionally scarring.  We should never know from that type of pain and may she find solace and purpose in her life.  I just wanted my response on record and do not plan on taking this further OT.

IDK which Lubavitchers/CHers you and your wife hang out with, but those stereotypes don't sound like the norm...

Geza
You've heard Gezhe referring to CH as "Ir Hakodesh v'hamechuzeh" (what does v'hamechuzeh even mean? ???) and what was that about Krinsky's basement? Ive been Gezhe for over a quarter century now and I have no clue what half your post even meant...

How can you be Gezhe for a quarter century? Did you marry in? That doesn't make you Gezhe AFAIK. Krinskys basement is a running joke that I've heard. Other references require understanding of some liberties taken from other references made in sichos, at farbrengens, etc. Guess they didnt translate well.
