An interesting thing I once learned about Tzedakah. If someone asked for money it is our job to give him (if we can), but not our job to judge whether or not he is in real need of the money. If we give him money that he doesn't deserve ("smoke and fress papittos for 10 months of the year") then it is up to Hashem to take away that money. We don't need to play G-d and judge who is legit or not.

But it says (not sure where) that you have to look into them to make sure we don't give our $ away to waste. The letters that each city gives out is our way of checking into them.

chill out, i happen to learn gemara and agree with RT....if the person is coming to your door chances are they need it, i cant imagine how embarrassing it must be to go around collecting money and out of 10 ppl that collect there are 2 fakers are the rest gonna suffer? think about it for a few minutes

You may he right but they have helped save hundreds, if not thousands, of Jewish lives, as I experienced first hand. Sometimes it's about the message, not the messenger. And if chalila someone in your family one day needs a donor you'll be happy they exist

In the theoretical sense, yes. For practical reasons, no.

I believe they are Mechallelei Shabbos (It seems they post on twitter, fb and on blogs on Shabbos), you might be better off giving it to the Red Cross.

I would imagine most of the meshulachim actually need the money. Unfortunately some are supporting themselves and all their kids in kollel without trying to get a job.

And sadly my family in Israel has told me of guys who come to the US collecting that own multiple apartments and have a lot more money than I do.

I've also had experiences where I've been handed money back when it hasn't been enough. And they've walked away.


I have a few aunts that got yelled at when they wouldn't open the door. One aunt was once outside and she said no and the guy YELLED at her to go get her checkbook and write out a check right now.

It's things like this that make it hard to know and make me hesistant to give so quickly. I make judgements on their actions and way of speaking and sometimes I try to schmooze with them which can give you a slightly better idea of who you're talking to.
Meanwhile I try to give everyone who comes knocking but the idea that my money might be headed towards a guys 2nd home makes my stomach churn when I know there are poor people out there without food on their table.

I just like to give my money to organizations that can use every $, not non-profits that have a huge payroll etc.

They use a very high portion of money received to actually run the organization. Only have 40 employees. Most of their staff is volunteer. And you can earmark every penny to go towards processing of new donors (which ours what I do). They have thousands of kits waiting to be processed. Your money could directly go towards saving someone's life
