I was referring to the spelling and grammar as one unit, one flaw in the article: the English. AKA a compound noun. Now try this sentence:

1) The spelling is atrocious
2) The spelling are atrocious

Where do I go to get my reputation back??

On the other hand, if Microsoft Office can have a 'Grammar and Spelling checker' (not 'checkers') then I vote @S209 should be vindicated.

I don't think that in your usage spelling and grammar is a compound noun, as opposed to in my issue where it is.
