any way to book reservation on UA w/o paying the fare lock fee

seems recently UA took away the option of booking a reservation and choosing the option of finishing off the purchase by telephone which then gave you a reservation #  a confirmed reservation holding for 24-48 hours
now in order to hold a reservation you must pay a fee even after cancelling the fee is non refunadable anyone aware of a way around this?

Use an account with a low or zero miles balance, it should put it on hold.

there is also a trick where if you click "pay with paypal" it will automatically generate a hold. Or simply add a partner segment and then call to cancel it off.

I haven't figured it out yet, but the PayPal option doesn't always come up, sometimes you can only select to pay by CC.

i tried adding a partner flt  when i did it didnt show the amount of miles needed  and then said sorry no availability so the idea may be obsolete they are looking to close all the loop holes that are out their

no as i dont want to pay ua the booking fee when i will tkt it if they make the orig res for what ever reason u will pay the reservation fee
only way around it is to make the res online and have them make the changes but i cant figure why ua would take away the fare lockby calling them as  thats how they make $$
