I just got screwed by AA and I was wondering if there is anything I can do about it.
Here is the story in short:
I purchased 5 tickets from AA with miles
Yesterday, I get an email from AA that they switched my flight to have a 2 hour lay over instead of 1
I called (waited an hour) and complained that I need to be in by the earlier time
I was told that they can make a scheduled flight change and its early enough that I can make new plans (the flight is October)
She said that there was another flight available at the same time but she would need 3 days to check if they change me and I should call back then to see if they can change it
I said that was not acceptable so she said my only other option is to cancel the flight
She then hung up on me
I went to Chase Ultimate Rewards and found a better flight and booked
Just as I'm confirming my purchase I get an email from AA that they switched my flight
I called back AA today to cancel my flight and they say that since I confirmed the switch I cannot cancel without paying $250
Because that phone call took 2 hours, I missed the 24 deadline to cancel the Ultimate Rewards flight
Now I have 5 tickets double booked!
The problem is that I am powerless against the airline, is there ANYTHING I can do?! It's a lot of miles/money at stake!
