a friend of mine, who has a canadian license, got a speeding ticket for going 77 in a 55 zone (in albany, right after the speed limit drops). the first court date was pushed off and now has a meeting scheduled with the judge for next week. any recommendations on what said friend should say or do? friend pleaded not guilty.

Thank you very much for your answer. Greatly appreciated. I am just thinking- there may be no gain by hiring a lawyer if the success rate is very low? So my best bet would be to plea guilty and take defensive course to reduce the points?
The price of 11 points in tickets is close to $1000 if you count in the driver assessment fee. So hiring an attorney for $300 or so may be worth it if your attorney has a better success rate then %5 :/ You may save your money if one one the 2 is dismissed.

As for the defensive driver program it doesn't "remove points", it does however increase the limit.

He can plead guilty to a reduced charge, the one he is looking at now is close to $700 and 6 NYS points.

What state is he from? If he is from Ontario he could offer to plea guilty to a 5 point cell phone ticket being that the cell phone does not transfer to Ontario. If he is from another state in Canada he should find out which violations do not transfer to his license.

He can also send a lawyer for him, but it sounds like he wants to go down himself.
