IP Address Question
« on: June 06, 2013, 07:58:12 PM »
I use a public Optimum Wifi hotspot. Every time I sign in the first 2 parts of the ip address are the same. For example 57.26. But the next 2 parts are always different for example 57.26.22.180 and 57.26.23.29.
My question is does this make me untraceable?

Noone is "untraceable" your device is logged plus your login id info.

For some purposes it can be helpful to have a fresh IP address.

Aren't the first 5 numbers unique to every ISP?

You are not explaining yourself. What do you mean untraceable, by whom? If you're doing something illegal then the government can get your info from Optimum, if it's a website, depends on how they are tracking you, by IP, cookie, or other method, or combination of them. So as long as you don't want to say who you're hiding from on one will be able to answer you.

For example, will Amazon Payments be able to track me?
1. My basic question is, if by the fact that the first 2 parts of the ip address are always the same, i'm still traceable through the ip address.

2. Also I'm curious if when someone changes his ip address and clears all his cookies, if there is a way for a website (such as Amazon) to trace and see the computer thats logging on, through a different way than the ip address?

From Googling a little. It seems like every computer has a MAC address. Are you saying Amazon can see my MAC address?
If I use a router, then they'll only see my router's MAC address?

that makes sense. Truth is, IMHO AP dosnt track more than just an IP address and cookies, (even that is doubtful). Others use a wirless device and turn airplane mode on and of to obtain a fresh IP.

(Remember, you are never anonymous for all other practical reasons)

Amazon cannot see your computers MAC address nor your routers MAC address.

Only the first router will see your PC's MAC address.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half
