taxes are crazy high
if you want to buy there to save money the sky high taxes may end up balancing out ALL money saved

Maybe Airmont is an option. I don't believe the taxes are as high as CR.

unfortunately all of rockland county has high taxes, unless you luck out on some house that is stuck in some old tax bracket (but they do catch up with you eventually).  if you  live in glenhill, elm, bates where it's condos u'll pay only about $4500 a year between taxes and monthly maintenance fees.  everywhere else ur looking at $8-14 thousand dollars anually on average.  chestnut ridge is on the higher end - between 11-14.  but i know ppl who pay less.  it depends on the house.  i live in airmont and pay 12 for no big special house...it's just that that's the bracket i'm stuck in and trying to fight to lower it. and don't trust the online quotes of taxes, they're all made up. you have to call the tax office to get the correct quotes. they're much higher and they're going up in september as well.

Why not make a shul in your house?  You'll pay no property tax and your neighbors will make up the difference! (like you've been doing for all the house-shuls in your neighborhood) lol...  ::)

it happens to be there was a shul in my old house though my parents never wanted to do that. But technically, you don't pay just for the shul plus you need to comply to a lot of specific laws.

I was under the impression there weren't too many requirements - like if you hold a minyan once a week and fill out proper paperwork that would be enough.  I could be wrong, I don't even own a house to put a shul in :)
