does CT do just emissions testing (so that even if i have on my engine light i can pass) as my car is registered in IN all it needs is emissions but in NY they only do the full inspection (as far as i know at least)or does anyone know a place that they can just do emissions

NJ only does emissions, but I'm not sure if you can pass with your check engine light on.

disconnect the battery and drive 50 miles to reset the system and hope it wont turn on again

CT does emmisions and you CANNOT pass with an engine light on

Depends. Do you know the diff. between a soft code and hard code? If it doesn't come back on on it's probably not that important. He didn't say why the light was on. Could just be an O2 sensor which is probably not an emergency. (I have that myself now, though I plan on swapping it out myself) My advice, if you don't know what it is, stop by your local auto zone and get a free diagnostics. Then proceed from there.

not at all. But I watch the autozone and carguy videos and do the simple repairs (eg: battery,brake pads & rotors) myself.
I always said I have a hard time rec. a mechanic bec. they are either too expensive , thieves , not knowledgeable, or a combination if the above. So when I'm sure of the problem and the fix is fairly simple, I try doing it myself.

open your hood disconnect the battery for about a minute then reconnect it close your hood get into your car start your car...

Why don't you just go to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts. They check your engine light for free, although its not always 100% accurate- but it's a start.

Why is it not 100% accurate? They use a top of the line obd II code reader. Once u have the code, just plug it into google.

sometimes it could be something minor like not screwing on the gas cap that triggers the check engine light although it can be something more serious/ expensive like an O2 sensor or a catalytic converter
