personally I believe he did it because he believed it was the right thing to do.
However, it is always tough for one person to decide what is in the best interest of everyone else, and no one elected him to make that decision.  Just because he believed it to be wrong doesnt mean that it is or that informing everyone will be beneficial. Therefore I dont think he is a hero.  He isnt a villain either because he did something he believed to be correct and it doesnt seem like it will cause much harm to US other than mistrust from its citizens and maybe some allies.  I also dont think he did this just for attention, there are easier and safer ways to get attention for yourself if you really want and it seems as if he is smart enough to have thought up some other way to gain fame/notoriety.

Great article.
+1
Exactly why I ask how the govt didn't see this coming. The techies are good at what they do but are very often introverts. Not a great comparison but the newton shooter comes to mind. (Obviously he much more issues than this guy)

Way to go lumping in all techies with the Newton Shooter.

... He isn't a villain either because he did something he believed to be correct...
That isn't the point, every villain believes he is doing the right thing to some extent.

He is obviously not the only person to think he did the right thing, as evidenced by the EFF sticker on his laptop.

I hope that you guys didn't miss out the WaPo article saying that 20 of the 25 slides that he provided weren't published because it would harm national security. Yes, WaPo.

He intended to harm this country.

He intended to harm this country.
Whether he harmed or not is up for is up for debate, but he definitely didn't intend to harm.

I am shocked by all the responses of he's a villain or attention seeker. Are all of you okay with the government knowing all of your phone conversations, emails, online chats, etc? This is wrong on so many levels. This man deserves a lifetime hero award.
