Has anyone else sold an end-of-lease car to a dealer (like Carmax) in the NY area? My lease is up in a month and the car is way under its mileage (only 15,000 miles and 36,000 were allowed) and Edmonds and Kelley Blue Book are both showing the resale value of the car as significantly more than the payoff value. Any advice?

We've bought our Odyssey at the end of the lease and sold it for a profit, however, we were surprised to see that there could be a $1200- $2000 tax/doc/license transfer fee when doing so...
(you can still profit; just info to prepare you...)

In CA that's only if you buy it out yourself, not if a dealer buys it.

Interesting. I notice that if I do a payoff quote on the Nissan Finance website it shows a lower price (by $2-3k) for 'Dealer' than for 'Other Financial Institution'. It wasn't clear what that meant, but maybe this has something to do with it?

no, that's them being idiots and trying to stop you from making money instead of turning in the lease and them making money. Dodge (Ally Bank) had a $8000 difference. I ended up paying cash and taxes (and they made me go to the dealer i originally got it from, where my frum leasing company [see upthread] got it from, about 2 hours away)and then driving back to carmax once I got the clear title and selling it to them. And i still came out on top.

If you buy the lease at the end they charge tax because it has to be paid and car is still registered.
If a dealer buys it no tax is needed since when he resells it the next buyer pays the tax.

-1 some places will roll it into the monthly payments. Call some places I think community leasing (845) 352-2255 may do it but not sure
