Whoa.
Are contract phones really discounted more than $400?

Huh? Now that deserves to go into the HOS.

My surprise is that a no-contract phone would cost more than $400 over an upgrade eligible phone.

@Dan - A contract is well worth over $400.
Lets say I am on a page plus plan, and wanted to get an iPhone. On eBay it would cost around $625-$650.

If I used someones contract, and bought it through bestbuy, I would only need to pay $150.

OP is asking for someone's upgrade which isn't going to get new contract pricing.

Why doesn't an upgrade get new contract pricing?? Most phones can be had for same price with new account and upgrade.

But not all phones/stores price out their phones like that.

For ex I don't believe Sams Club does.
Radio Shack doesn't sometimes and others as well.

Are those stores ever cheaper than Amazon?
Sprint.com is $599 no contract/$249 upgrade/$149 new plan.

Hence my question, when will it be worth paying $400 for someone's upgrade?

I don't think it's worth it. Not because the stores aren't cheaper but because you can get a better deal on eBay most of the time IMO.

+1
unless op is calculating for example samsung galaxy s4 $599.99 + tax to buy it straight up= $641.99
upgrade price is $249.99 + tax $267.49 -$50 rebate=  $217.49
so op would pay $617.49 a savings of..... $24.50 IMHO alot of trouble to go through for that amount of money but you never know...

these number are calculated at nj sales tax of 7%

Maybe OP is offering $400 period. And the Acct holder has to pay the remaining cost ;).
