Have an Indian make if for you.

They charge $1.89 + tax per hour.  ;D

Although it may be cheaper to do it overseas, it takes forever to explain your ideas and thoughts to someone on the other end of the earth. Yes, they will be cheaper then a US company, but there are other factors you need to consider.

No way to tell for certain without seeing the site but if it's something WP can handle, $5k is a lot, especially if all the deliverables were really late.

Easier said than done.
There was a time when most of my work was from people who had a site made overseas but came to me when they needed it to actually work...
I've seen some really, really bad work coming from overseas.

That being said, I know people who've found really good people overseas, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't know what you're doing.

Were there cheaper options available? perhaps.
But $5k for a custom eccomerce site is not a ripoff.

Sounds like you got ripped off.
What kind of site does your wife have?
If a person has a moderate level of technical knowledge, and the time to spend then, yes they could do it for free (themselves).  But some people aren't so technically inclined, or would rather not deal with the headache.  $5 sounds like a good deal for a professioanl e-commerce.

True, but anyone with a half a brain can direct an Indian.

The Indian only cost a few dollars an hour, but you have to also consider how many hours you'll spend reviewing his work and instructing him and factor in the cost of your time (which is more than a few dollars an hour, I assume...).

If you're working with competent people who share your native language, there's a lot less misunderstandings and back-and-forth.

Not true.
You need the technical knowledge to know what to direct him to do and the Indian-direction knowledge to know how to say it.

Even if you can do it, it's like AsherO said

For every person I know who's had success with "Indians," I know 10 who've had nothing but aggravation.

Yes, you might get lucky. But it's not just a matter of simply paying an Indian $2 an hour and that's it.

It also depends what you're looking for.
If all you need is a simple "brochureware" site, than go for it. If you need any complex programming then it's a big risk.

I have been doing web design & development for about 13 years now. I have built websites for fortune 500 companies, SMB's and local mom & pop shops, chabad houses etc.

I have done lots of work overseas (India, Macedonia, China, Ukraine, Russia & Finland) and had lots of ups and downs. I have had to fly to some of those countries to whip the team into shape etc....

Overall I would say stick with a local reputable firm for anything above an info site. Its a known fact that Indians suck at design as well.

Ukraine is good for eCommerce or custom stuff like CRMs etc.

IMO, it is worthwhile to spend a few extra bucks to get good, English speaking tech support.  I know some people do not like them, but I've had good experiences with godaddy.
