Sounds like an amazing experience. Must have taken a while to write up. Was this the trip you told me about over Shabbas in March?

@ Chuck yes that was the trip
@ dan, lets not get into the hyatt Argument again

Yes, with american cc you can get flights and hotel for free, but this points can be sold for money as well, so i do look at spending my points as if i spend cash. If not you are cheating yourself a little... its free, but you could have had cash in your pocket

how far would you take that argument? say for example, if someone were to give you free tickets to the basketball game, would you also argue that youre not really going for free since you could have sold the tickets for cash in your pocket?

Thanks for taking the time to write it up! I really enjoyed reading this TR, it kept me busy most of my bus ride home!  :-)

Loved your trip report. Almost planned a family trip for July with points but when I figured out the value decided that it was way out of my budget. Argued with myself both ways and decided against!! Still not sure- I am holding on to the tickets until the last minute.

This should be required reading for wives of DDF members. Before we fly out from NY to Bali with our baby you can bet I will have my wife read this :)

The amount of time, that goes into planning a trip like this... cant even count. So its really only worth it for ones own trip, as if someone would charge for it, for most people its way to much
Sure, you can plan it within 2-3 hours, if Budget is not a issue. But if you want miles flights, points hotels, discounts on all activities....then it just takes alot of research and effort

One of the reasons my wife like to go on such trips with me, she knows everything is planned perfect and we travel comfortable and stay at nice places. There are no screw ups. The only way of doing this with some sort of a budget, is spending alot of time researching everything. With everything I mean

- how long are the drives
- look into babysitter services before, so I have some quality time with my wife or do some activities that the kids cant do
- what food can I get at what destination
- get a healthy mix of stuff that interest adults and kids
..... and much more

For all the new DDF members here a link to my other big tripreports, both of them without kids, but you can see it was planned to the last detail

Something else, I would like to add, that is very important on long flights with kids. I think this will make a huge difference: Make sure they are kept busy, if they are board they get quetshy and then the wife gets unhappy and a nice trip turns into a pain in the a.. shlep. If they are busy, the parents can also relax on the flights, watch a movie and everyone loves it.

A PSP (playstation portable) doesnt cost alot. Kids, especially boys love it. Now if they can play with it every day its nothing special anymore and after a hour they get board. So I only give it to them for trips and its really special for them and they can be busy with it for 12 hours, np. We do this for long car rides (2 hours+ and flights) We travel to Israel alot. With easyjet its cheap from Switzerland and friends ask how can you do this with your kids, my kids are impossible on flights. The wait in the airport and the flights... For us its really not a issue, because the kids love it, as they know finally another chance to play with the PSP.

Another part, that makes its easier each kid has their own little carry on

Before the flight we will fill it with sandwiches, nosh and other goodies. The kids know, this is their personal food that has to last for the flight, so they dont come every 2 minutes to the parents: I am hungrrrrryyyyy
Once again its a small thing, but it makes a big difference

I am not saying all kids are the same, but with mine these 2 things make a 10 hour flight easier then watching them at home for 10 hours :-)

In my family I am the wife and the trip planner!!!!! My husband comes along, but if I wouldn't plan it it wouldn't happen.
