   [th]Area - Address [/th]
   [th]Supervision[/th]
Tierra Sur At Herzog Winery in Oxnard 5/5 stars-The menu here is constantly changing but is always amazing.  The flavors you will try here are unlike any you will get at another kosher restaurant in the world.
Oxnard -

La Gondola4.5/5 stars
-Avocado eggrolls to die for (I had it and I didn't like it
I can't eat Avocado when it's warm, I'm sure others can't too-Sillypainter).  Great Bread with garlic margarine on the house(agree-Sillypainter) Great Gondola Burger special for lunch with excellent pasta or a soup.  And the Chai Steak with Carmelized Steak Sauce and arguably the best kosher ribs out there.   I'm getting hungry thinking about this place!
Pico

Meatos - https://meatos.us/

http://charcoalgrillbar.com/

Shiloh's4/5 stars
-Great baby back ribs and peppercorn steak.  They serve steaks with a number of dipping sauces which is pretty cool.  Also had some delicious key lime pie.
I did have a bad experience here with really bad food though...and service can be poor here as well.
Beverly Hills Thai4/5 stars-It can get very crowded so it's best to make a reservation in advance.
Jeff's 3.5/5 stars-Homemade onion rings, homemade sausages, Steak Sandwich, Western burger, lots of good and greasy stuff here.
PKD (Pico Kosher Deli)3.5/5 stars
-Excellent Deli-style food along with equally good homemade onion rings. No Reservations, but rarely more than a few minute wait. closes at 9 PM.
Pat's3/5 stars
-Either you love this upscale steakhouse or you hate it.  I used to hate it until my brother became good friends with the bartender.  Now when I go back with him we're treated to a feast for a king! Don't miss the bread pudding dessert!
Shanghai2.5/5 stars
-LA hasn't had very good Chinese since Sholom Cuisine closed.  This place is decent though.
Harissa4/5 stars-Home of the LA-famous pretzle challah! They offer Middle Eastern/Mediterranean/North African cuisine.  They have lots of seating and long hours.

Milk/Parve:

1. Fish Grill
4.5/5 stars
-The best fish you'll ever have, period.  I'm not such a fish person, but their Grilled Salmon on Angel Hair Pasta with a huge order of well-seasoned fries...YUM! Get the grilled salmon sandwich.

2. Milky Way Reopened, brand new place worth a visit
4/5 stars
-Steven Spielberg's adorable mom will come shmooze with you and show you his movie posters in the back.  Cheeze blintzes and lemon tart are awesome. Chimichangas, potato latkes, and more all at prices that haven't been raised in decades.

3. Pizza Nosh (Agoura Hills)
4/5 stars
-Excellent pizza and Eggplant Parmesean, worth a stop if you're in the area.

4. Pizza Mayven
4/5 stars
-Good plain pizza and excellent fries, and that's about it.

5. Nagila Pizza
3/5 stars
-Good but pricey stuffed crust pizza, and that's about it. There are some big fans of their Naco's out there as well.

6. Trattoria Natalie
4.5/5 stars
-A trattoria is translated from Italian as a tavern, and that's what this restaurant feels like.  They have a cool on-table feature: its a paging device with three bottons.  One botton calls for water, the other for the bill, the last for a waiter.  The food is very good and prices not too expensive.

7. Meshuga for Sushi/Meshuga for Sushi 2
4/5
-With 3 locations (one in La Brea, one in Pico, and one in the valley), they offer great sushi at reasonable prices.  They have some space to eat in the restaurant.  They have long hours and a decent lunch menu.

IF you eat non-CY:
-Sweet Rose Creamery, on Beverly is Kosher and considered some of the best ice cream in LA by foodies http://www.sweetrosecreamery.com/, usually have 4 or 5 non dairy flavors
-Toppings Frozen Yogurt 349 S Robertson Blvd, good frozen yogurt, usually have a non dairy flavor or two

If you eat CY:
-Milky's at 1429 S Robertson Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90035 recently became kosher and is cholov yisrael.

Breakfast/Bakery:
1. Cafe Elite
4.5/5 stars
-Amazing cake/crumb donuts along with your usual breakfast food.

2. Schwartz Bakery/Circa NY
4/5 stars
-A great but expensive bakery.  The crumb cheese danish is a personal favorite, as is their wonderful Caramel cake and "kit kat" chocolate rice crispy bars.
They also now serve breakfast in their Pico and Fairfax location.  I had the combo Pancake+Waffle+Franch Toast meal with fruit salad that was very good.
On friday's only they sell raspberry cheese pockets - they always sell out of them early.

3. La Brea Bagel
3/5 stars
-Very good bagels with all kinds of toppings and other breakfast food.

4. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf - 7235 Beverly Blvd
4/5 stars
-The only coffee bean in LA that has Cholov Yisroel upon request and offers 3 Pas Yisroel bakery items from Delice; Chocolate Almond croissant, Custard twist, and chocolate croissant - also upon request.

SHABBOS TAKE OUT OPTIONS

1. Ralph's - both the Pico and La Brea locations have a kosher section with takeout

I assume there's no eruv in the area?

thx

Don't think there's an eruv but ask R' Eli Fink: rabbifink( at )gmail.com.
Check out his shul Pacific Jewish Center - 30 min walk, but on the boardwalk so it's right off the water and a fun stroll.  Rabbi is @efink.  Hit him up on twitter too.

I haven't stayed there myself, but saw rooms and was at a wedding there. It's not 5* nice, but decent.

It depends what you want to be near. If you mean lots of restaurants and shuls then no. It's very close to LAX though. ;D

I have a friend in the heart of Hancock Park (Beverly -La Brea) neighborhood. He has a 2 bedroom guesthouse that he's thinking of making available as a vacation rental. What do you think he can charge for it per night?
I told him its a great idea especially now that so many people are going to LA on the delta glitch tickets. Any thoughts?

I am looking for a place for January 24th and 25th
would it be available?

Do the Ghirardelli shops have a hechsher? I see shops at Disneyland and at Hollywood Blvd. I know most of their packaged stuff is kosher (but not CY). Curious about the Ice Cream and Chocolate shops.

Thanks.

I don't have updated info, but as of 1.5 years ago the ice cream was Dryers (Edys) and the chocolate sauce was also kosher. While the shops don't have hashgacha most of the food is kosher.

I called up Ghirardelli directly (which, yes, I probably should have done before posting  :)) and they were helpful, to a point. They claimed that all of their product was kosher, with a symbol on the packaging that I was welcome to inspect at the store, but that once it was opened to serve it lost its kosher designation. While incomplete, this is not a bad answer for such a question, right? I was expecting much worse/less.

They also could not tell me who's ice cream the sell ("it's proprietary information" (!)) and that different stores might sell different things when it comes to hot drinks, sauces, etc. so... YMMV.

Is it worth shelling out the extra points for LMSM?
le meridien was decent, nice ocean view, but IME, they don't give the hot tub rooms for points...
Costs full price/cash...

In that case, I can recommend a few more hikes:

In the Santa Monica Mountains:
1) Eagle Rock (from the Trippit Ranch parking lot).  On a clear day, this hike has amazing views of both the valley and the beach. (I went on the 4th and it was so foggy You couldn't see 100 feet ahead of you)
2) Escondido falls.  This hike starts from the parking lot right off of PCH in Malibu.  You start walking on a paved road for a bit, but the hike gets harder as you go.  After the paved road it turns to dirt requiring you cross a few streams (in the summer there might not be any water in them).  When you get to the lower falls, you have the option of going to the upper falls, but it is near impossible with a child backpack for hiking.  It's really steep with lots of climbing over boulders and the like. However, the upper falls are absolutely gorgeous.
3) Temescal Canyon. This hike also has a falls, but it totally doable with a child carrier.  There are two ways to do this hike as well.  One way starts of extremely steep and has a slower gradual decent (this is the 'harder'/ or 'backwards' way) but it is closer to the parking lot.  Pass this point and go the other way for an easier hike.  You will hit the water fall by the bridge (there won't be too much water in the summer) towards the beginning of the hike with the steep downhill at the end.

In the Hollywood Hills:
4) Runyon Canyon is very close the La Brea Jewish community.  There are 3 ways to do this hike: easy (middle path), medium (right/ eastern path), and hard (left/ western path).  All hikes eventually merge near the top with the last portion of the hike being the same for all.  There are no waterfalls here, but there is an amazing view of the city from the top.  On a clear day you can see from the beach to downtown and beyond.
5) Franklin Canyon has a few nice hikes around the reservoir (some are shady)
6) Tree People Park/ Fryman Canyon has nice hikes with different difficulties

Keep in mind while hiking in LA:  Many hikes do not have shade!! If you want to hike on a sunny day, I would advise not hiking between 11am-4pm when the sun is the strongest.  If you have cloudy mornings like we've been having the past few weeks it will make it easier but might block the views.

Hatzlacha!

Great info on LA hikes here...also here  Check out http://thishikingtrail.com/ for more LA hikes.

Catalina Island (expensive), ATVing (might not be good for little kids), walking around nice areas, parks, amusement parks, etc.

What other types of activities did you have in mind?

whale watching in boat off Newport Beach,
food, ice cream, sushi, steak (depends if you have these where ur coming from ...)
pleasant 60s, 70s temps - if coming from cold east coast, then a fun park like Cold Water Canyon Park in Beverly Hills
is fun, free, great for kids, then splurge on lunch/dinner:

I actually like the Sheraton Gateway LAX.  Very good with Plat upgrades too.

Staying at Sheraton Gateway LAX on Club Floor - 32k points for 5 nights.  Am Gold Status. Is that a reasonable use of points? Any recommendations re: parking? food? breakfast, etc?

Thanks for the recommendations.  Are all the whale watching tours the same?  Are ones better than others?  There are a bunch of groupons out there...not sure which to pull trigger on...

Went last Pesach on one of the Groupon Newport Beach whale-watching tours.  They're all relatively similar - check tripadvisor ratings and it's a solid activity.  Also, check out horseback riding at Griffith Park if you have age-appropriate kids.  Dodger games are always fun if kids are into sports.
