Tierra Sur At Herzog Winery in Oxnard 5/5 stars-The menu here is constantly changing but is always amazing.  The flavors you will try here are unlike any you will get at another kosher restaurant in the world.
Oxnard -

La Gondola4.5/5 stars
-Avocado eggrolls to die for (I had it and I didn't like it
I can't eat Avocado when it's warm, I'm sure others can't too-Sillypainter).  Great Bread with garlic margarine on the house(agree-Sillypainter) Great Gondola Burger special for lunch with excellent pasta or a soup.  And the Chai Steak with Carmelized Steak Sauce and arguably the best kosher ribs out there.   I'm getting hungry thinking about this place!
Pico

Meatos - https://meatos.us/

http://charcoalgrillbar.com/

Shiloh's4/5 stars
-Great baby back ribs and peppercorn steak.  They serve steaks with a number of dipping sauces which is pretty cool.  Also had some delicious key lime pie.
I did have a bad experience here with really bad food though...and service can be poor here as well.
Beverly Hills Thai4/5 stars-It can get very crowded so it's best to make a reservation in advance.
Jeff's 3.5/5 stars-Homemade onion rings, homemade sausages, Steak Sandwich, Western burger, lots of good and greasy stuff here.
PKD (Pico Kosher Deli)3.5/5 stars
-Excellent Deli-style food along with equally good homemade onion rings. No Reservations, but rarely more than a few minute wait. closes at 9 PM.
Pat's3/5 stars
-Either you love this upscale steakhouse or you hate it.  I used to hate it until my brother became good friends with the bartender.  Now when I go back with him we're treated to a feast for a king! Don't miss the bread pudding dessert!
Shanghai2.5/5 stars
-LA hasn't had very good Chinese since Sholom Cuisine closed.  This place is decent though.
Harissa4/5 stars-Home of the LA-famous pretzle challah! They offer Middle Eastern/Mediterranean/North African cuisine.  They have lots of seating and long hours.

Milk/Parve:

1. Fish Grill
4.5/5 stars
-The best fish you'll ever have, period.  I'm not such a fish person, but their Grilled Salmon on Angel Hair Pasta with a huge order of well-seasoned fries...YUM! Get the grilled salmon sandwich.

2. Milky Way Reopened, brand new place worth a visit
4/5 stars
-Steven Spielberg's adorable mom will come shmooze with you and show you his movie posters in the back.  Cheeze blintzes and lemon tart are awesome. Chimichangas, potato latkes, and more all at prices that haven't been raised in decades.

3. Pizza Nosh (Agoura Hills)
4/5 stars
-Excellent pizza and Eggplant Parmesean, worth a stop if you're in the area.

4. Pizza Mayven
4/5 stars
-Good plain pizza and excellent fries, and that's about it.

5. Nagila Pizza
3/5 stars
-Good but pricey stuffed crust pizza, and that's about it. There are some big fans of their Naco's out there as well.

6. Trattoria Natalie
4.5/5 stars
-A trattoria is translated from Italian as a tavern, and that's what this restaurant feels like.  They have a cool on-table feature: its a paging device with three bottons.  One botton calls for water, the other for the bill, the last for a waiter.  The food is very good and prices not too expensive.

7. Meshuga for Sushi/Meshuga for Sushi 2
4/5
-With 3 locations (one in La Brea, one in Pico, and one in the valley), they offer great sushi at reasonable prices.  They have some space to eat in the restaurant.  They have long hours and a decent lunch menu.

IF you eat non-CY:
-Sweet Rose Creamery, on Beverly is Kosher and considered some of the best ice cream in LA by foodies http://www.sweetrosecreamery.com/, usually have 4 or 5 non dairy flavors
-Toppings Frozen Yogurt 349 S Robertson Blvd, good frozen yogurt, usually have a non dairy flavor or two

If you eat CY:
-Milky's at 1429 S Robertson Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90035 recently became kosher and is cholov yisrael.

Breakfast/Bakery:
1. Cafe Elite
4.5/5 stars
-Amazing cake/crumb donuts along with your usual breakfast food.

2. Schwartz Bakery/Circa NY
4/5 stars
-A great but expensive bakery.  The crumb cheese danish is a personal favorite, as is their wonderful Caramel cake and "kit kat" chocolate rice crispy bars.
They also now serve breakfast in their Pico and Fairfax location.  I had the combo Pancake+Waffle+Franch Toast meal with fruit salad that was very good.
On friday's only they sell raspberry cheese pockets - they always sell out of them early.

3. La Brea Bagel
3/5 stars
-Very good bagels with all kinds of toppings and other breakfast food.

4. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf - 7235 Beverly Blvd
4/5 stars
-The only coffee bean in LA that has Cholov Yisroel upon request and offers 3 Pas Yisroel bakery items from Delice; Chocolate Almond croissant, Custard twist, and chocolate croissant - also upon request.

Dan youre 100% right, a decent 4 br in le brea area home rents for 3k+ and sells for min 1,000,000. rent is much higher than almost all of the jewish areas across america and is a joke compered to cle. however average salary is more i believe. and this issue of young couples having to shell out 40k+ a year on rent is truly a crime with nothing to show for it. bottom line its very expensive to live in the city of la. pico is signifigantly cheaper as well as the vally

Personally, I live in Pico and I don't think it's that much cheaper than living in La Brea.  Sure, Beverlywood is more expensive than La Brea, but most of the Pico neighborhood is not in Beverlywood.  Home prices came down a bit but are still expensive (3/2 about $1.2M).  I rent an apartment, so I know those best.  The cheapest you can find (1/1, bad layout, not new) is about $1200/mo with 2/2 between $1700/mo and $2500/mo.  These prices have recently gone up in the last few years as many young couples have been moving into the area.

Also, we have almost no smog here because of the ocean breeze.  The breeze also keeps it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, especially at night, as we're only 8 miles from the beach.  We also have most of the kosher restaurants in the city right here (including the new La Seine Restaurant, which is amazing).

All in all, the most popular neighborhood in LA for young couples!

True.  I was referring to the area between Beverly Dr. and Robertson (or if you want, La Cienega); Olympic and 18th/ Monte Mar.

I will be in LA for a day and a weekend bookending my trip to Hawaii. I will of course stopping as many times as I can at Jeffs and Fish Grill but I will also probably have an opporunity to do a fancier sit-down restaurant for one night (and maybe Sat night too). I have done Shilohs once, loved it and would do it again but I have heard good things on the forum about La Gondola? If you had to do one, which one would it be? All suggestions/opinions welcome!

It depends on how much time you have in LA on the weekend end of your trip.  Tierra Sur is in Oxnard, CA and is about 1:15 (65mi) from LAX without traffic.  La Gandola is amazing and is located in Beverly Hills (near Pico).

We also have a new fancy sit down place calle La Seine.  It's located on Restaurant Row in Beverly Hills.  The executive chef was a contestant on Top Chef.

"La Seine is designed not as a kosher restaurant, but as a great restaurant that just happens to be kosher" (Laurent Masliah, Owner)

The prices are about what you'd pay at Tierra Sur (ie. very expensive) and the portions are small, but the food, drinks, bar, etc. are absolutely amazing.

Besides those (and Shilo's which you know of), there's also Pat's which has been around for a long time and has a wonderful reputation.

If you want dairy sit down, the 2 nice places (in the Pico area) are Milk and Honey (not Milky Way) and 26.  Both are on Pico Blvd.  Milk and Honey is older, but has delicious food with generous portions.  26 is newer and is decorated with a modern twist, but their portions are smaller.  They have a nice bar, but it is not loud inside.

Additionally, there is a little known Thai place also on Pico called Bodhi.  They have some of the best authentic Thai food in the city while being vegetarian at the same time.  I know it might scare you to try a vegetarian place, but they have fake meat and tofu that you get with every dish and you don't notice that it's not real that much.  Bodhi is not very fancy, but they do deliver for free in the Pico area with a $15 order....and they're super fast, too.

Even at 1:15, Tierra Sur is probably the only world class kosher restaurant that exists today.

Have you ever tried La Seine?  Most people who have would prefer to rate it like Tierra Sur.

When I was in LA in May I spoke to multiple people about it and the consensus was not very pretty so I didn't bother.

That was true.  Since then they've upped the quality of their food quite a bit, but I agree with you that Tierra Sur is nearly in a class of its own.

Planning a trip to LAX in the summer. I will be at the west coast from wednesday morning until wednesday evening the week after. we are 2 adults, 4 kids (oldest 6) I was planning on doing the follwoing

wed-fri   san diego area    (seaworld, legoland, uss midway, belmont park)    I saw i Can buy a 3 day go san diego pass for 190 Dollars that gives me access to all places

Any good advice were I should stay? right now I am looking at the sheraton carlsbad resort, as I can get it with points.
What kosher restaurants do I have in the area?
Is the san diego zoo really worth a visit?

fri-wed Los Angeles

I am still debating if I should stay in someones house for shabbes and get to know the jewish community or check in friday into a hotel. If I would go to a hotel it would be the SLS, as they have Cash and points available for my stay. The only thing I have planned for Los Angeles is Universal studios, that will take up a day. The rest of the time we will just chill, wife will shop..... maybe drive to grand canyon if we get board...

So here some questions to the LA part

If I stay in the SLS any nice chabad within walking distance, that we can eat our meals on shabbes (hate takeout meals in hotel rooms) Is there a eiruv in that part of town?
Herzogs restaurant sounds like a must do, is the tour of the winery worth as well?
If I want to rent a small motorboat for half day to cruise along the shore, whats the best, cheap place?
anybody ever stay at the SLS? Do they have a good breakfast place nearby?

Any other advice, please feel free to add

priceline works well in sd. i usually get the omni or westin horton for under $100. check betterbidding and biddingfortravel to see what people are getting and for how much
san diego zoo is a world class zoo and they have a panda if youre interested

no disneyland in la?

afaik, the winery tour is DIY, and takes no more than 20 minutes, so it shouldnt really be a big decision

rent a boat at marina del ray

If you are able to, I think it makes sense to stay by someone for Shabbos.

Im not sure how many of the Chabad houses have meals on Shabbos except for a kiddish after davening.
Although, Im sure they will be glad to help you out.

The closest Chabad is around the corner, Chabad of Miracle Mile.
Others can be seen here.

Never stayed but it does look nice.

As far as breakfast goes, its a short drive (~2 miles) to Elite Cafe or La Brea Bagel or to the Pico area with multiple options.
