Sounds nice. Venice is not north, it is right next to Santa Monica. The canals are awesome though. Why don't you spend the day in Santa Barbara or something and then have Tierra Sur on your way back to LA? Santa Barbara has a nice beach area to rent bikes and stuff and there is a little town to walk through. They also have a nice zoo from what I hear, especially if you have kids with you. I think there is a Coffee Bean too.

oops, what do you think of venice+ catalina island+ malibu fish grill (it's on the way north towards oxnard, right?) for monday vs. just santa barbara, i left my daughter home so it's just me and my wife, but she is a couple months pregnant so i can't do anything too crazy.

Catalina requires you to go south also (from Long Beach or San Pedro). Malibu fish grill is on the way up north though. You can also go to the Camarillo Outlets if you're into that. Or maybe do another calm water activity in Oxnard/Ventura/Santa Barbara area.

how long does catalina take roughly, maybe we'll do that on the way to SD on tuesday and do malibu FG and ventura/santa barbara (water activity) on monday...

Catalina is nice, but expensive (about $70 each).  The boat ride is about 1:15 each way.  Once on the island, you take golf carts around and look at the buffalo. I haven't been in a while but I'd say you can probably spend 2 hours there (or 4:30 total).  Malibu FG and SB on the same day is good too.  You can even stop by when they open at 11:30 and take food to go to eat in SB for lunch.  Then take the 101 back with a stop at Tierra Sur.

You can also rent kayaks in Oxnard if you want to do a water activity closer to the restaurant.

u can do the venice canals on sunday along with ur santa monica plans. its actually on the way from the airport to santa monica,
they have boating near there as well as biking. they have electric bikes if ur wife doesnt want to work out too much.
seeing the shops and "attractions" on venice beach is interesting as well.

also if u need, there is a costco right near there - on washington off of lincoln blvd. they have natural and kosher cholov yisroel cheese and kosher chicken and meat (not sure of the company or hechsher bec i dont buy there)

u realize that the santa monica pier is at its busiest on sunday right? especially with this heat wave.

meaning if u decide to ride the ferris wheel its gonna be a long line!! (the amusement park doesnt charge entrance fee btw. u pay per ride or all day wristband)

the pier and shops will be jammed

but if thats all part of the tourist attraction, then go ahead

the trip should be a little cheaper because the entertainment book has a $15 dollar off coupon for the catalina marina del rey flyer and a $10 off coupon for the catalina express (i imagine the $70 is the boat ride, right?)

What place is the best to order take out food for shabbes

Need a place that has all and is open late, as i wanna come back from san diego as late as possible

i have never been in SD but check out the SD thread, it says that there is a ralphs in la jolla that has alot of kosher food and a hot deli open til 630-7pm

Edit: just realized you are probably talking about in LA... sorry i have no idea, ill let the locals answer
