United Upgrade

I am trying to get an upgarde for my wife and kids for their upcoming trip to Colombia. I have 38k miles to work, is this possible?

Sorry, this is reward travel. Tickets were 40k mile each or 120k total. I have 38k left and would like to upgrade them to make this trip very special for them.

I booked a paid ticket with United for 260 plus another 84 dollars for EP, now i see that United opened saver business class, is it better for me to just cancel my existing ticket and grab the award for 25 k miles plus about 70 dollars? or should i put my self on the upgrade list? which way will come out cheaper? will I clear on the upgrade list?  (and if i cancel the paid ticket, is any way to get back a FULL REFUND?)
