Higher End Used Car vs Lower End New Car?
« on: June 26, 2013, 01:02:05 PM »
People are telling me that a used car is only going to bring problems in the near future but then again if it's a higher end car that shouldn't really be the case.

Example-
2010 Acura RDX or GMC Terrain fully loaded?

A GMC fully loaded is probably the same as a standard RDX

Were you asking a question? If so what exactly is your question?

The Acura will cost a lot more to fix than the GMC Terrain.

I actually own a 2010 GMC Terrain, I bought it new. I am very happy with it so far. (I have over 77k miles)
I only paid 15% by switching to dansdeals

-1. How do you figure the Acura is more to fix?

higher end dealer parts generally cost more and therefore even the non dealer made cost more

Not on most Japanese cars.

My understanding is that honda/acura parts are not much more expensive than domestic.
I would go with the Acura over the GMC because the Acura is superior in quality and (perhaps) comfort, but most importantly because Japanese cars are way more reliable than domestic cars. It will also retain its value better, if you would want to sell it in the future.

The more "options" there are... the more there is to break...

+1 I can't speak for all cars and all parts, but I recently replaced an O2 sensor (B1S1-the most expensive one out four on an Avalon) and the cost was about $80 more than if I had been replacing one on a domestic model. It does seem from reading numerous DIY forums that many of the Toyotas (foreign cars?) are very sensitive when it comes to aftermarket parts and require OEM.

The Rdx is not more comfortable then a Terrain, the Rdx is more sporty.
Although the Terrain may be more clumsy.

I drove both your exactly right. I even only test drove the 2008 RDX and it was a more sporty drive and the terrain was kinda clumsy even fully loaded.

I'm just scared that buying a used car will bring extra repairs like a year down the road that a new car wouldnt need

Bring a mechanic or someone who knows cars to check it out before you purchase it.

That's the nature of the beast and part of the risk you take when buying used. That's why you pay 50% less than new. That being said, a decent car with low mileage will hopefully give you many years of trouble free driving but you will have to maintain it and occasionally repair and replace things.
