For those that don't know how certificates work.

Seven night and five night certificates

1. Marriott certificates can be used for any reservation that can be booked with points. To search for reward availability simply go to marriott.com and check the box to search "using points".

Marriott hotels are divided into categories. (Cheapest being category one) below is a list of all the category 1-4 hotels  http://www.marriott.com/hotel-search/Category1.hotels.Category2.Category3.Category4.Category5/

2. A 5/7 night certificates must be used for 5/7 consecutive nights. The reservation cannot be split up.

3. In order to hold the room you need a credit card. Your card will be kept for incidentals and you won't be charged for the room.

4. Certificates can be gifted BUT the room needs to be booked under the account holders name and you will be added a secondary guest.

5. Gold or plat benefits depend heavily on the hotel. At check in you may or may not get an upgrade.

How would I combine a stay where I use my own certificate, with a certificate that I buy here? Will I need to checkout and check back in? Will I need to change rooms?

here is a few of the things you'll see in this thread:
1. One Marriott award night that can be used in category 1-5 hotels. cannot be upgraded. good for one night.
2. A seven night Marriott award stay that can be used in category 1-5 hotels. These CAN be upgraded using points. these are good for 7 nights. cannot be split or broken up.
3. A five night award night stay that can be used in category 1-5 hotels. These CAN be upgraded using points. good for 5 nights.  cannot be split or broken up.

Thank you. So when people sell the 7 night certificates for $250, that's for the whole week?

Regarding point 3, if the AH is not a Marriott time-share owner at the moment, then it's very risky to upgrade the certificates. In short, the Marriott representatives cancel the existing certificate and reissue a new one in a higher category, but they will be unable to do so if the AH is not a time-share owner. That' been my recent experience, at least.

Bump

I have used certs (mine, and my brothers) for a stay in Montreal. At that hotel I pointed out the two bookings and they organized it so I did not have to move rooms. I may have had to come down and re-check in, but not move rooms.

Thanks for the info. Since your brother has the last name as you (or does he?  ;)) they might have let it through. Not sure what if I buy it from a total stranger.
