For those that don't know how certificates work.

Seven night and five night certificates

1. Marriott certificates can be used for any reservation that can be booked with points. To search for reward availability simply go to marriott.com and check the box to search "using points".

Marriott hotels are divided into categories. (Cheapest being category one) below is a list of all the category 1-4 hotels  http://www.marriott.com/hotel-search/Category1.hotels.Category2.Category3.Category4.Category5/

2. A 5/7 night certificates must be used for 5/7 consecutive nights. The reservation cannot be split up.

3. In order to hold the room you need a credit card. Your card will be kept for incidentals and you won't be charged for the room.

4. Certificates can be gifted BUT the room needs to be booked under the account holders name and you will be added a secondary guest.

5. Gold or plat benefits depend heavily on the hotel. At check in you may or may not get an upgrade.

If someone wants to help a newbie - if I'm selling a 7-day cert, what do I need to do to protect myself?  I have interest from a member who also doesn't have a long background on the forum, and I'm not sure if this is a good idea.

New as well and looking to buy a certificate. Is paying upfront via PayPal (with a verified US address and a longstanding account) not considered protection? If there's a different standard protocol here, I'd be curious for some helpful tips as well. I have bought on eBay before, but only found this forum a couple months ago.

Someone offered this methodology: I book the room in my name, add theirs in the comments as guest, and they paypal me after I forward them email confirmation.

Is this "safe?" i.e. am I protected if they don't actually paypal me?

Or, do I need someone to paypal me before I book in order to be safe (in which case they would take the risk - I doubt anyone would do this for a new account such as mine, so probably I would need to find someone else with a long history on the board and take the risk myself, since I'm new?)  Sorry if these questions are newbish/stupid!

The seller has little risk as seller can always cancel (unless it's for a very near term booking).
Seller makes booking, adds buyer as second guest. Sends buyer confirmation number. Receives payment.
Buyer can always pay with PayPal goods and services for extra protection (to protect against seller fraudulently canceling booking after receiving payment).
Seller should not use real credit card number when booking to protect against incidentals.

ask for references. I am not particularly active here but have purchased goods several times. The most recent seller, sky121,  very politely asked me for references documenting good transactions. I happily sent and she sold the item to me.

Good luck.

as long as you are paying for it as for merchandise. Some sellers only wants friends and family transaction since I believe paypal reports sales that add up past a certain threshold annually to the IRS. When paying as friends and family you have no protection so you should be comfortable with risk which is mitigated by seller history here

When paying as for merchandise you should be willing to pay the paypal fee, ie $1000 agreed upon price, 3% fee, you send $1031 so seller nets the $1000 price. That is my experience as a buyer and as a seller although I mostly buy.

Others may have different advice, just my experience.
