Topic Wiki

For those that don't know how certificates work.

Seven night and five night certificates

1. Marriott certificates can be used for any reservation that can be booked with points. To search for reward availability simply go to marriott.com and check the box to search "using points".

Marriott hotels are divided into categories. (Cheapest being category one) below is a list of all the category 1-4 hotels  http://www.marriott.com/hotel-search/Category1.hotels.Category2.Category3.Category4.Category5/

2. A 5/7 night certificates must be used for 5/7 consecutive nights. The reservation cannot be split up.

3. In order to hold the room you need a credit card. Your card will be kept for incidentals and you won't be charged for the room.

4. Certificates can be gifted BUT the room needs to be booked under the account holders name and you will be added a secondary guest.

5. Gold or plat benefits depend heavily on the hotel. At check in you may or may not get an upgrade.

See post #4067 for a history of bid/ask on these 1/5/7 night certificates of different levels

My Marriott points are expiring soon, if I book a room on points and cancel it, would it extend the life of my points?

It would not, I believe.
When you cancel and the system auto redeposit the points, the system actually goes into and revises the point deduction entry to show as zero point.

Correct

any way to avoid 3rd person fee (child)?

once you factor in parking, extra person fee, wifi, resort fee etc.... its tempting to not waste my points (50k/night on avg) and just use Airbnb instead.

tried to do a booking last night for HI and was shocked that I was getting hit with near an extra $100/night in add-ons.

If there is a couch why disclose the 3rd person and why dont you just park off site, if that's possible.

I'm not cheap, but have done it many times, parked smack in front of hotel, faster then garage parking and didn't pay 50 for the convenience of parking 3 stories underground and walking up.
Always praying for delayed baggage.
