The most simple way would be to call main marriott number to do the booking for you. They can make the reservation for you with your cert. You would tell them to add a second guest name to the reservation and then you would see their name already in the email confirmation. This way it has nothing to do with the hotel and would work even in surfside.

Is there any reason to believe this would not work at the Residence Inn Surfside (as it does at every other hotel)? @iluv2travel

Sorry did not see this. It should work, but don't hold me to it if it doesn't . They're the only hotel I've come across that makes issues, not just with this but everything. I book hotels for employees and colleagues traveling all the time using my certs and points and have never had an issue with either one.

Perhaps @yungermanchik can tell us what ultimately happened with his reservation booked for someone else.

I ended up booking on the phone using points, as per the hotel's phone rep, and adding my friend onto the res. on the phone. After he checked in, I emailed Marriott that for some reason I couldn't book with my cert. and could they please swap it. In the morning, they emailed me back that they did. I checked my account and sure enough, the points were back and the cert was used.

Could there have been a better/easier way to do it? Very likely! But in the moment this made sense and it worked out.

That was smart to wait until after check in, as you had already done it with the points so better to be safe and make sure the guy checking in can get the room keys. Could potentially be a workaround for using a certificate for someone else at this property if the hotel refuses to honor additional guest check in.
