I know it's been discussed ad nauseum, but can I just ask again for advice (or point me to the thread) about flying J between NYC and TLV?

I have someone else paying a revenue ticket for me, but I would like to try to save them some money if possible.

Seems that consensus is that the DL JFK-TLV and TLV-JFK flights are the best, because of the hard product and because they are night flights.

I infer that the UA flights EWR-TLV and TLV-EWR are good but not quite as good as DL, with the night UA flights being better (for sleeping) than the day flights.

And everyone thinks that the LY flights are several notches below DL and UA.   Is that true universally, even for the LY 747 flights JFK-TLV and TLV-JFK?

(I'm in Boston, but even the nonstop BOS-TLV flights, both overnight, would be suboptimal because the J is angle-flat.)

Lastly, there's AC YYZ-TLV which is nice because it's on the 787, but those are daytime flights.

Opinions (or direction to other threads) welcome. Thanks!

Thanks. I did, but forgot to mention it.
In terms of sleep, the timing of the outbound is pretty good:
BOS-IST, 11PM-4PM, then 6:20PM-7:30PM into TLV.

But the timing on the return is not great, at least for me.
Leaving on Wednesday:
TLV-IST 10:30AM-2:00PM, then IST-BOS is 3:30PM-6:45PM, so not an overnight flight.

Leaving on Thursday would be even more problematic (again, at least for me):
TLV-IST 9PM-12:30AM (Friday Morning)
15Hour layover
IST-BOS 3:30PM-6:45PM (after Shabbat so won't work).

I guess if they had the same schedule on Thursday (i.e., a morning flight TLV-IST) I would consider it, but even so, it's not an overnight flight, which I think is a priority.

I personally prefer the AC or UA afternoon flight TO TLV, as those arrive in the AM.

DL and UA fares ex BOS are usually lower than ex NYC.

If price wouldn't be a concern I would fly outbound on UA or AC and return on DL.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

-->>Do you sleep flying to TLV? Isn't it too early to fall asleep, and then you arrive in TLV when your body thinks it's middle of the night?

I'm not seeing lower DL and UA fares ex BOS, except for those that connect through Europe. I'm looking on Google Flights.
-->>Maybe I should look elsewhere?

The DL and UA nighttime return flights seem to be the ones that jack up the prices.  I'm not paying but hate to stick it to the people who are.

Which is why I say that on the outbound UA afternoon or AC are best. You go to sleep a few hours into the flight (never travel without Ambien) and get there in the morning for a full day. Alternatively take a connection for the outbound, a day will be killed no matter what you do, so the connection isn't that bad.

That is indeed the case. The night flight out of TLV commands a premium (for a legitimate reason). I usually use momondo.com and look at individual flights rather than complete tickets in order to find what I want.

Ok, I've never gotten the hang of momondo but I'll go back to it!  Thanks for the advice.

Thanks. Below is what I told my host. I'm waiting for his reply.
1. First choice is Outbound AC and Return on DL nocturnally.
2. Second choice is AC both directions.
3. Third choice is El Al (they seem to find that more palatable) but only on LY8 JFK-TLV and then returning LY15 TLV-BOS (as I don't care so much if I'm coherent after I return home for Shabbos :)).

I'll let you know how it shakes out....

Option 1 is basically 2 one way tickets. Probably cost prohibitive. Might be more palatable if you'd do AC/UA or UA both ways.

Do you think UA both ways would be better (for me) than AC both ways? I guess if I got the nocturnal UA ex-TLV it would be. How much better are the AC hard and soft product compared with UA?

Looking for some guidance here.. When i search for RT flights from NYC-TLV for sukkot 2017, BA flights with a stop in LHR cost around $1,400.  If i manufacture my own connection by booking NYC-LHR and LHR-TLV RTs separately (with all flights on BA metal), the cost is like $400 less.  Am i missing something here? Any reason not to do this?

if your flight gets delayed the airline isnt responsible for the 2nd leg

Even if all the flights are on BA metal?  They won't take responsibility for the delay if they cause a missed flight on their own airline??

Very Helpful. Thanks. Is that because of the hard product? The seating is great on AC but so private that couples can't talk?

UA is good for couples, but flying solo I'd go with the extra privacy.
Also, fewer ATC delays flying via YYZ than NYC.

Though I do like flying via EWR for New Kosher Special :)
But it's tough to spend $40 solo there.

I haven't tried New Kosher Special. How could it beat Taam China?!
