Marketing bubbe maisos.
Yeah, going the wrong way west back into Europe before going east to Japan / Alaska.

Are there any Fifth freedom routes out of TLV? Would be nice to see TLV become a layover airport.

Seems like they are going all-in with the A321neo Long Range.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

They can compete with DFW from ORD as well for flyover country traffic. And it's closer to TLV than IAH. And there are more Jews than IAH. And it's a bigger hub than IAH.

Why take on Elal? Why not just go with Houston where they wont have the competition?

UA isn't afraid of LY. Certainly not in ORD.

Well, DEN- TLV would have been direct competition with AA; so maybe for all us who don't care which airline they fly TLV- North just more is better, it's better that United waited and maybe somehow this route Texas- TLV route will work and then United can start the competition.

https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news/2019/08/22/american-airlines-dfw-tel-aviv.html

Quote
One factor in recruiting airlines is incentives, which the ministry provides to airlines to aid in marketing new routes for their first year of operation. The ministry gives airlines €250,000 for each weekly flight up to three flights for a maximum of €750,000, which is about $830,000.

There are several qualifications these routes must meet to be eligible for incentives. Flights must be operated 49 weeks during the year on an aircraft with at least 140 seats. The U.S. gateway can't have a direct flight to Israel for a period of one year prior. No future service is scheduled to commence from airport. And, the airport is at least 100 kilometers from any other airport which operates direct flights to Israel.

Because the DFW-Tel Aviv route met these qualifications, American will receive the €750,000 incentive that will aid in marketing efforts around the new flight.

When asked what other international routes received a similar type of incentive, an American spokesperson said all new routes receive this support.

"The incentives are used for marketing the route, and while it does help, it’s not the only factor we consider when launching new service," said American spokesperson Nichelle Tait.

Golan said the ministry has given incentives to several other carriers launching new North America-Israel flights including United Airlines Inc. (Nasdaq: UAL) out of Washington, D.C., Air Transat out of Montreal, and Israeli carrier El Al out of Miami. She added El Al will soon receive additional incentives for a route out of Las Vegas.
