Wierdest time to announce a new route. Only logic I can think of, is to put salt on LY's wounds. For crying out loud, the borders are still closed. EWR flights are barely half full. And a new route now?!
I guess it was an opportunity to beat El Al to it.
Not weird at all. LY is going to have to decide which routes to cut in the coming days.
UA just added ORD onto that list.

The question is why now? If they felt the route is profitable, they could’ve beat LY to it a year ago. Why wait till LY launches the route, and then try to force them out? Did LY sales help them decide it’s profitable? Or is it because AA delayed DFW launch?

Doubt it has anything to do with that. United has been making astronomical amounts of $ on ewr-tlv and tlv is a well positioned cargo hub. There's never been a better time to test a new route than now.

It's everything combined.
AA delay, LY delay, cargo rates, etc.

Right, but not trying purely to spite ly. They're too big a company to play footsie with dysfunctional ly...

Not weird to announce they will launch the route. But September?! Seriously?! How about March 2021?

And I guess they find TLV more profitable/attractive to them than AKL or CHC.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Hoping for RH/Sukkos traffic.
And they want to lock in the route and contracts before LY, exactly as they did successfully in SFO.

Oh I don't think that's going to happen. But we can dream.
Either way, I'm guessing that cargo will help pay the bills.

Not so far fetched.. there are lots of israeli citizens/people who can fly to israel in the us now. And all they need is one nice cargo contract like they have at ewr and the route will be profitable just off that.

Wishful thinking based on April/May numbers
Israeli hospitals can handle 600-900 patients in serious condition. It’s currently at 90 and predicted to reach 300 just with existing infections deteriorating. The government is frantically scrambling to enforce SD laws to avoid a total lockdown, which is nearly inevitable. There is no way Israel will open in September. Israeli hospitals overflow every winter

I don't get it. The times for the route don't make so much sense for Shomer Shabbos traveler.
Leaving ORD and getting in to TLV on a Friday Afternoon + a Shabbos departure from ORD. Leaves one normal departure from ORD for the Shomer Shabbos traveler.
On the return by leaving on a Friday night - your cutting off a return.
Who exactly is United target market over here?
