Inter-Thailand Flights   Bangkok Airways (PG)

PG flights are bookable on points through JAL, CX, EY and AB.

JAL
Required Mileage: Transferable from SPG. JAL uses a distance based award chart and allows up to a maximum of 7 stopovers (8 segments). To figure out how many points you will need, add up the total amount of miles that will be flown (can do this on GCMap.com) and then find the appropriate row in the award chart (http://www.ar.jal.com/ar/en/jalmile/use/partner_air/p_jmb/jmb_mile_ar.html). If you are traveling before 3/31/2017 there is a promotion for trips up to 4,000 miles (see http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/pg_discount/index_en.html for reduced mileage rates). The promotion makes JAL the best award redemption option for PG flights.

Booking the Flight: The only way to find out if there is availability on the flight that you want is to call JAL. Recommended that you do so before transferring points. JAL doesn't allow you to hold a reservation so you have to hope that the flight doesn't get booked up while you're waiting for the point transfer to go through. Once the points post to your JAL account, call JAL back to book.
+1 800-525-3663 (5:00 - 18:00 PT) press 1 - 4 - JAL membership number - # - pin - # - 0 (for human or 1 for computer search)

Traveling with Infant: Tell JAL that you are flying with a lap child. They will put the infant on the reservation, but they will also tell you that you need to call PG directly to get the infant's ticket issued and pay for any taxes etc. JAL will only charge you for the adults on the reservation. Unless you speak Thai, calling PG won't work (when you press 9 for English when calling any of the Asian offices, the message will tell you to go to their website, and the office in Germany can't issue tickets). To add the infant, send an email to reservation@bangkokair.com with your confirmation number and tell them you want to have the lap infant's ticket issued. They will email you back with the price (data point: it was ~$96USD for CNX-USM-HKG for me) and ask you to reply with your cc info split into two separate emails for security (one email with first 8 digits, exp. and name on card, second email with last 8 digits, cvv, and billing address). I believe they only take Visa or MC. You'll then get an email back with confirmation.

Baggage Allowance: Economy passengers are allowed 20kg, infants (and dolls) are allowed 10kg. Excess weight on domestic flights will incur a charge of 80thb ($2.25ish) per kilo. International overage fee chart can be found here. Join the PG FlyingBonus program to receive an additional 10kg.

Contacting PG: In general, if you have any questions, the only way to speak with them in English besides email is PG Live Chat. You can find the link if you log in to your Flyer Bonus account. Chat reps are very helpful.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO PAY (JAL AND PG) WITH A CC BELONGING TO SOMEONE THAT IS TRAVELING ON THE ITINERARY. PG WILL SOMETIMES ASK YOU TO SHOW THE CC USED TO PAY FOR THE TRIP WHEN YOU CHECK IN, AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DENY BOARDING IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT.

100$ Per person to Phi Phi? I paid 300BHT which is about $10.

I'll say it again, I went to phi phi for a day, fell in love - stayed for weeks.

Anything I see online is about 15000 baht. You just went to the dock and found someone? Or did you go on the public ferry? What time of day? Could you have brought luggage?

Don't prepay for anything in Thailand except for your hotel.
Everything is negotiable. And far cheaper than an American can imagine possible.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I went by public ferry, as much luggage as i want. Got a foot massage on the ferry. (Few chabadniks with me did mivtzoim and put teffilin on a bunch of unsuspecting israeli backpackers)

Quote
WikiTravel: Ferries leave from Phuket and Krabi daily (from Krabi two ferries a day at 09:00 and 14:30 and from Phuket at 09:00, 11:00, and 14:30 several times a day (11:00 during high-season only). Tickets can be purchased on-line or on the dock, from tourist offices, most local guest houses and hotels. There is a 20 baht per person fee required on the pier for "keeping Ko Phi Phi clean". Unfortunately, there is still plenty of rubbish on the beaches.
Ticket prices
600 baht one-way/1000 baht (there are also 450 baht boats if not cheaper depending on the time; you get cheaper return tickets on Phi Phi Island which are between 250 and 450 baht depending on the destination, also without guest house deal) round trip when bought at the Phuket pier (as of 2009/09/15). Possible to get 300-350 baht one-way tickets as part of a deal with a guest house stay.
You can get from the Phuket Airport to Rassada Pier by meter taxi for around 500 baht. It's about a 30 km drive and takes 45 minutes depending on traffic and weather.
From Krabi Town - 300 baht in June 2012 from PP Family, office right by the pier in town, incl. songthaew to the pier outside town. The normal passenger ferry does not leave from the centre of town anymore, but from a new passenger port (Klong Jilard Pier Tel. 0 7562 0052) about 3 km outside Krabi Town. Free taxi transfer to the pier should be included in the price of your ticket. Many times they'll take you to a travel agent near the Chao Fah Pier and sell you additional accommodations or services. Only ever buy the ticket you need. They add additional ferries during peak season.
From Ko Lanta - 350 baht.
Not all ferries are of equal quality. Andaman Wave Master is the only company that will take you for free to the north of Phi Phi after the stop at Ton Sai Pier. The Sea Angel ferries are quite nice with big flat screen TVs and refreshments. These are sold on-line as first-class ferries. The ferries run by Chao Koh group, particularly the smallest "Pichamon IV" are often overcrowded and appear to be very poorly maintained, which does not inspire confidence, however they are launching a new mega boat beginning of 2010. In April 2007, a ferry operated by Andaman Wave Master caught fire and sank, and all aboard were forced to jump into the sea. Fortunately, nearby vessels were quickly able to rescue all the passengers, and no casualties occurred. The ferries run by PP Family are larger and seem more suited to the task. The ferries run by Phi Phi Cruiser may take a little longer but they include a movie, complimentary breakfast (if taking the morning crossing) and complimentary beverage service. For an additional fee, you can purchase a "VIP ticket" which also includes snorkelling and a buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don.
Other tour vessels visit the island from several Phuket-based resorts, usually on day trips, the price for a speedboat from Rawai Beach was quoted at 15,000 baht return(or one way) for up to 6 people(Dec 6 2007). There are many speedboats operating directly from the beach but it may be best to book the day before as most seem to be on away on trips during the day. Speedboats can also be chartered from other nearby locations, but at a very high price.

I know of the public ferry. Problem is I'm going during low season so it's 9 (I had seen 8:30) or 1:30. Arriving at like 1 AM. Don't know if I'll make the early ferry and really don't want to wait for the late one

And as Dan said don't prepay for anything.

This might not be relevant for Ergel but just an interjection - I wouldn't say don't prepay for anything. Two notable exceptions:

1) Some of the good / cheap hotels do sell out around the busy season, and prices skyrocket a couple days in advance. I had this experience personally on Koh Samui between x-mas and new years, and had to look at options I wasn't so thrilled about.

2) Sometimes the public ferries also get sold out in the busy season, especially routes to / from / through Koh Phangan around full moon festivals. Also if you order from the official ferry company online 72hrs in advance, they include a free shuttle transfer to the ferry dock, which saved me a few hundred baht each way on Koh Samui.

True and true. I retract my first point as you both already implied / mentioned it, but I still think point 2 is helpful information.

Glad you found something. I was checking JS for months but never found anything in the dates or locations I was looking for, and anything close the prices weren't quite there.

Anybody know anything about The Naka Island in Phuket? It's a SPG property, but no one seems to have mentioned it yet. Is it new? Or just really really really bad? :P

Phuket isn't just Patong. It's a big place.

Although personally, I'd look into one of the floating river rooms in Khao Lok if I were w/o kids.

Isolated is good.
If we could get that type of isolation in LA or MIA, then it would be an spg Category 10+.

Why not do Phi Phi?

Arriving in HKT at 1:30 PM, leaving 3 days later at 11:30 AM (they moved the flight back an hour or two). Think I can make it from Phi Phi back to HKT airport in time, without getting up at the crack of dawn?

Although personally, I'd look into one of the floating river rooms in Khao Lok if I were w/o kids.

Thanks, I'll look into it later today. Does he/she/it discuss these "floating river rooms"? Or am I supposed to be looking somewhere else?

P.S. I was told to avoid Patong at all costs. :P
