Inter-Thailand Flights   Bangkok Airways (PG)

PG flights are bookable on points through JAL, CX, EY and AB.

JAL
Required Mileage: Transferable from SPG. JAL uses a distance based award chart and allows up to a maximum of 7 stopovers (8 segments). To figure out how many points you will need, add up the total amount of miles that will be flown (can do this on GCMap.com) and then find the appropriate row in the award chart (http://www.ar.jal.com/ar/en/jalmile/use/partner_air/p_jmb/jmb_mile_ar.html). If you are traveling before 3/31/2017 there is a promotion for trips up to 4,000 miles (see http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/pg_discount/index_en.html for reduced mileage rates). The promotion makes JAL the best award redemption option for PG flights.

Booking the Flight: The only way to find out if there is availability on the flight that you want is to call JAL. Recommended that you do so before transferring points. JAL doesn't allow you to hold a reservation so you have to hope that the flight doesn't get booked up while you're waiting for the point transfer to go through. Once the points post to your JAL account, call JAL back to book.
+1 800-525-3663 (5:00 - 18:00 PT) press 1 - 4 - JAL membership number - # - pin - # - 0 (for human or 1 for computer search)

Traveling with Infant: Tell JAL that you are flying with a lap child. They will put the infant on the reservation, but they will also tell you that you need to call PG directly to get the infant's ticket issued and pay for any taxes etc. JAL will only charge you for the adults on the reservation. Unless you speak Thai, calling PG won't work (when you press 9 for English when calling any of the Asian offices, the message will tell you to go to their website, and the office in Germany can't issue tickets). To add the infant, send an email to reservation@bangkokair.com with your confirmation number and tell them you want to have the lap infant's ticket issued. They will email you back with the price (data point: it was ~$96USD for CNX-USM-HKG for me) and ask you to reply with your cc info split into two separate emails for security (one email with first 8 digits, exp. and name on card, second email with last 8 digits, cvv, and billing address). I believe they only take Visa or MC. You'll then get an email back with confirmation.

Baggage Allowance: Economy passengers are allowed 20kg, infants (and dolls) are allowed 10kg. Excess weight on domestic flights will incur a charge of 80thb ($2.25ish) per kilo. International overage fee chart can be found here. Join the PG FlyingBonus program to receive an additional 10kg.

Contacting PG: In general, if you have any questions, the only way to speak with them in English besides email is PG Live Chat. You can find the link if you log in to your Flyer Bonus account. Chat reps are very helpful.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO PAY (JAL AND PG) WITH A CC BELONGING TO SOMEONE THAT IS TRAVELING ON THE ITINERARY. PG WILL SOMETIMES ASK YOU TO SHOW THE CC USED TO PAY FOR THE TRIP WHEN YOU CHECK IN, AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DENY BOARDING IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT.

All the way to cns and didn't get to the gbr? Oy.
Yup, but my in-laws live in Australia, so hopefully we'll make it out there again one day.

Most people would not go on their last day there because it is unsafe to fly a short while after scuba diving, as it is a risk to get the bends. I was there in August and my wife who is not a strong swimmer had no trouble snorkeling for hours on the water as it was so smooth and calm.
I was pregnant so couldn't go anyway, but would have liked to see what i could from a boat, at least.

no, that wasnt my reason, but rather the food just wasnt good, while the chabad food, although much simpler, actually tasted fine
After weeks of OK food in CNX, HKT, MEL, DPO, and HBA those ribs and fries at Katzy's were downright divine.

Does anybody have any experience buying a cheap suit in bangkok? I'm looking to buy a cheap custom made suit and wanted to know if anybody can recommend any tailors and if they ship to america? (I will only be there for one day so I can only do one fitting and will need them to ship the suit to america).
Thanks!

Yes.Go to Amit Fashon which is located on Kao Sahn Rd. (one street behind Chabad) entrance  under the D&D inn in the alley. Dont get convinced by all the people in the streets asking you to make a "kalifa" (חליפה)!
tell him you know Rabbi Nechemia from Chabad and ask him for a nice discount. and u can bargain him down. i bought a nice suit for $135 and good quality shirts for $23 each (took a long process - few weeks-  the bargaining ) in general those shirts cost like $35-$40.

If im not mistaken they will ship it to u for a charge. ask them

The Shliach In Chiang Mai told me he made one, but was not thrilled by the way it came out.
I dont really know any more details.

Great post comparing Starwood properties in Thailand.
http://boardingarea.com/blogs/verygoodpoints/2012/12/23/a-comparison-of-starwood%E2%80%99s-thailand-hotels/

Also, I need your opinion. We enjoyed our stay so much in August to the north, that we're considering returning in the January'ish time in 2014 if I can book a free leg onto my upcoming award flight. We'd bring our three kids, all 6 and under at the time.

What do you recommend? Phuket despite its being a tourist center? A quieter beach place? We need a place that the kids will enjoy but I'd prefer to not return to Chiang Mai since there is no beach there.

Thoughts?

What do you guys think about going to CNX in May? I read that it's the beginning of the monsoon season there.

May should be fine... It's tropical weather and even a little rain is not a problem, always warm and all activities can be done in rain.

I've personally visited Chiang Mai once in the dry season (feb) and 3 times in the rainy season (Twice in June and once in August) and was very happy I chose to go.

You just need to have a good attitude in case you get a little rain and take things easy.

Jan is high season, so you'll have great weather and higher prices..

Definitely Phuket is the place to go if you are with kids, there is a great JW Marriott in Phuket that I can highly recommend. Water slides, kids play area, over all great property. Also might be worth driving a little over an hour from Phuket airport to go to Khao Lak, Le Meridien there is a great option for kids

Anyone know anything about diving in thailand?

Can I do that anywhere near CNX, or would I have to take another flight?

(P.S. I've reached out to ChikkyMonkey--who is apparently Mr. CNX, but haven't heard back. Anyone know him personally?)

Sorry for late response. Some great diving options, nothing in the north though, you'll need a flight. if it's May your best bet is Ko Tao (2 hour boat ride from Samui) or you can do a one day diving trip from Samui to Ang Thong or somewhere near there.. . You can actually get certified for about $300 for open water there... Or do a discover diving for about $60-100 I believe

What should I do about booking for them? Just fill out one kid in the reservation and then show up with all 3 (age 6,4,1) and tell them I don't need extra bedding?
I don't want to have to book 2 rooms or pay extra.

Also, if I do Koh Samui, how do you recommend going from there to Phuket, or vice versa? The only direct flight is expensive.
I was told on FT that it's possible to do a ferry and then a cab ride or s/t of the sort to go from Samui to Phuket. Is there anywhere to stop along the way for a night or two which you recommend?

Finally, Khao Lak or Krabi if I want to escape Phuket for a few days?

Great, this is very promising.

During the rainy season, when it rains, is it the whole day, or is for like 5-10 minutes?

My wife and I are both already open-water certified, so we're just looking for a great place to do some diving.

I'll definitely check out the options above. Thanks.

I have a reservation (3/11-3/13) in Khoa Lak, Le Meridien, I reserved a room with c&p I emailed to find out what it takes to get an upgrade to a pool villa, they responded:
“Warm Greeting from Le Meridien Khao Lak Beach & Spa Resort

Thank you for your email and interest on Le Meridien Khao Lak Beach & Spa Resort.
Regarding your enquiry below, we are pleased to inform you that Villa in not entitled for SPG upgrade however we have instant award, 1 point is $75. We are pleased to offer additional for upgrade to Pool Villa at THB 13,000. Therefore points is required is at 32,500 points/night.”

I’m platinum and I have suite upgrades, should I wait until 5 days before and hope for an upgrade to a suite and then upgrade to a pool villa? Any other suggestions?

Villas are not in the upgrade pool.
However I paid a whole lot less points than that for our villa. I'd try again.
Beware there are tons of wildlife/creatures/bugs on this property due to the location.  Moreso than anywhere else.

First of all, bump

Secondly, I'm being told that Samui w/ kids isn't a great option since the Conrad there has the open infinity pools and a lot of hills.
So, any advice if we wanted to travel to a second country for a few days? Any cheap routes, either using Avios (or a different currency) or cash?
Let me add in that it would be nice if s/t departed from Phuket so I can do that and then fly back to BKK.

Khao Lak vs. Krabi really depends on the resort you're looking at... if you're considering LMKL for kids it's tops, great kids play are, great kids pool, great playground in the water for really young ones, great babysitters, you just can't go wrong.

I didn't have problems with bugs, could be summer season (June) isn't as bad. Obviously in the tropics you'll always see some, but no problem at all for us.

As far as another country, in the surrounding areas, you won't really find anything that would interest the kids more than Chiang Mai or the islands in Thailand. Cambodia is great, but not much for kids.. Vietnam also nice but nothing special kids wise..  depending on what you've seen up north I might recommend going back and dividing the trip between beach and north.. for kids the CM zoo is very interesting, they have some nice pandas, bus that takes you around.. Bangkok also has a great aquarium kids would love...

Thanks for the great advice!
It would be next December.
Which islands do you recommend for ease of access, and potential activities?

3)chaing Mai 2 days min
