Inter-Thailand Flights   Bangkok Airways (PG)

PG flights are bookable on points through JAL, CX, EY and AB.

JAL
Required Mileage: Transferable from SPG. JAL uses a distance based award chart and allows up to a maximum of 7 stopovers (8 segments). To figure out how many points you will need, add up the total amount of miles that will be flown (can do this on GCMap.com) and then find the appropriate row in the award chart (http://www.ar.jal.com/ar/en/jalmile/use/partner_air/p_jmb/jmb_mile_ar.html). If you are traveling before 3/31/2017 there is a promotion for trips up to 4,000 miles (see http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/pg_discount/index_en.html for reduced mileage rates). The promotion makes JAL the best award redemption option for PG flights.

Booking the Flight: The only way to find out if there is availability on the flight that you want is to call JAL. Recommended that you do so before transferring points. JAL doesn't allow you to hold a reservation so you have to hope that the flight doesn't get booked up while you're waiting for the point transfer to go through. Once the points post to your JAL account, call JAL back to book.
+1 800-525-3663 (5:00 - 18:00 PT) press 1 - 4 - JAL membership number - # - pin - # - 0 (for human or 1 for computer search)

Traveling with Infant: Tell JAL that you are flying with a lap child. They will put the infant on the reservation, but they will also tell you that you need to call PG directly to get the infant's ticket issued and pay for any taxes etc. JAL will only charge you for the adults on the reservation. Unless you speak Thai, calling PG won't work (when you press 9 for English when calling any of the Asian offices, the message will tell you to go to their website, and the office in Germany can't issue tickets). To add the infant, send an email to reservation@bangkokair.com with your confirmation number and tell them you want to have the lap infant's ticket issued. They will email you back with the price (data point: it was ~$96USD for CNX-USM-HKG for me) and ask you to reply with your cc info split into two separate emails for security (one email with first 8 digits, exp. and name on card, second email with last 8 digits, cvv, and billing address). I believe they only take Visa or MC. You'll then get an email back with confirmation.

Baggage Allowance: Economy passengers are allowed 20kg, infants (and dolls) are allowed 10kg. Excess weight on domestic flights will incur a charge of 80thb ($2.25ish) per kilo. International overage fee chart can be found here. Join the PG FlyingBonus program to receive an additional 10kg.

Contacting PG: In general, if you have any questions, the only way to speak with them in English besides email is PG Live Chat. You can find the link if you log in to your Flyer Bonus account. Chat reps are very helpful.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO PAY (JAL AND PG) WITH A CC BELONGING TO SOMEONE THAT IS TRAVELING ON THE ITINERARY. PG WILL SOMETIMES ASK YOU TO SHOW THE CC USED TO PAY FOR THE TRIP WHEN YOU CHECK IN, AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DENY BOARDING IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT.

Can't remember the name but I saw someone here post a link for a really nice resort on a river outside of CNX with private pools overlooking the water
sounds cool but I have done lots of reading in this thread and haven't seen it mentioned. Link?

The river looks kind of nasty.

Trying to plan a trip to HKG/Thailand at end of November and would love to get some feedback. Based on current CX availability, we're planning on arriving in HKG on a wednesday morning and leaving from HKG back to NYC two weeks later on wednesday evening. Haven't planned activities yet but want to book flights before availability disappears

Wed @ 6AM - arrive HKG
Thursday @ 8PM (4PM?) - HKG to BKK
(Shabbas in BKK?)
Monday morning - BKK to CNX
(Shabbas in CNX?)
Sunday - CNK to USM
Wednesday - USM to HKG
Wednesday evening - HKG to NYC

Should I add Phuket in somewhere? Where should be spending shabbas? Looking for a little downtime but we like doing stuff

Thanks!

If we want to be in HKG then we'd need to be in HKG from wed morning through Shabbas. From reports above, that seems like way too long? Should we replace BKK with HKT?

Thailand Master Thread

I'm planning a trip to Thailand and maybe hkg for the summer. Starting in Tlv. I haven't booked flights yet. I'm looking at going on a Wednesday, flying Turkish using UA miles. The flight and seat (J) haven't opened up yet. (Hopefully it does really soon).
Had a few questions regarding where exactly I should go. Going with my wife and 6 month baby.
1) As of now, the plan is to arrive in BKK on Thursday afternoon and stay till Sunday. As mentioned many times up thread, I've seen that there isn't much to do in BKK. Is it really that bad for even a Friday and shabbos?? Also, the Chabad Rabbi Rabbi Wilhelm is my moms second cousin. Would that make it any easier? (I haven't been in contact with him yet). What would be the best/ cheapest hotel to stay at in close proximity to Chabad?
2) go to HKT for 2 nights, from Sunday to Tuesday. Stay in the Anantara. Stay in the villa one day and maybe check out the island(s) another. Anything a must in HKT?
3) go to CNX from Tuesday till Sunday. Is that too much time? As of now I'm reserved in the LM with points until Friday morning. Not sure if I should switch to the shangri-la for shabbos being that it's right next door to Chabad (stroller, eruv..?)
Plan on getting lots of massages, going to all the animal farms....
4) we aren't sure if on Sunday we are going to end up going to HKG. If we do, it'll probably be for 2 nights. I would like to go, but my wife is worried about it being to hot there. Is it the same weather as Thailand or worse?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Interesting. I guess I'll do a little more reading on HKG then. I thought a day or two would be enough.

This is gonna be end of November/beg of December which according google sounds like the end of rainy season. Is there anything in HKT that we couldn't get in USM?

That is fine when you are able to be out and about. If you are not doing anything over Shabbat, the extra days do not make it overkill.

2-The only must to do in HKT is to relax!! why not just stay in Anantara villas for both days and enjoy the private pool/ beach-I am not sure if the isalnds tour is going to be so enjoyable with a 6 mth old...
3-A little too much -I would stay in HKT for one extra day and go to cnx from wed.-sun. (especially because you prob. wont do any of the zipline/atv stuff cuz of the kid). We stayed at the LM the whole time (even Shabbos)-Fri night we got a babysitter from the hotel (dirt cheap!! they are off duty front desk/room service girls-we met with her the day before and felt very comfortable-we put the baby to sleep before she came and she just sat in the room the whole time-on Shabbos day the Rabbi from Chabad arranged for a worker to come to the hotel and pick up the stroller and bring it back after the meal-In hindsight it would have forsure been way more convenient to be next door in the Shangri la for Shabbos but I was bent on using points and not switching hotels)
4-It is very hot everywhere in that region at that time of year-dont read up online about HOW HOT AND UNPLEASANT it is there at that time because it makes it sound worse than it really is-it is hot but with the right mindset you'll have a great time!! Although they say HKG is hotter than Thailand, honestly once it gets that hot that you are wet from just walking outside you cannot tell which one is worse! I have been to Miami many times that it was just as hot and humid as HKG and that still does not stop people from going....ok, now that I finished my rant abt the weather... ;D ::)

Thanx for the response! I read your TR and it was very helpful!
2- I'm totally for chilling the whole time in the Anantara. That might just be what we'll do. I would also love to stay in HKT for longer, but I'm trying to spend as little out of the pocket money as I can. The villas are at least $300 a night (after emailing them and bargaining them down).
3-if I don't end up staying in HKT until Wednesday, I'll probably end up going to CNX just because there is no where else to go for 1 day (or there is...?). I am debating on getting a babysitter as well, depending if I feel comfortable. And if I do find one, I might as well do the zip lining and everything else I can't do with a baby. I might even hire a babysitter to come with us on the trips. We'll see about that. I saw on your TR that you stayed in the LM and it worked out fine. I'm just not sure if I'll have enough to SPG to cover 5 nights plus HKG. Cheapest SPG free night in HKG is 10k. If I don't end up doing HKG, I'll have enough. (Trying to get more referrals... pm if you need me to and you one.)
4- I really don't have a problem with the heat. I grew up in Miami Beach and have been thru enough summers there. My wife is just s little nervous about the heat for the baby. I do t think it's such a problem. I am assuming I'll be indoors most of the time. It's not like there's much scenery to see in HKG.

Just make sure the baby drinks ALOT and you'ss be fine/and keep him/her out of the sun as much as possible-in the stroller w/ the shade closed, etc.-we had a two year old and we gave him to drink every second
