Inter-Thailand Flights   Bangkok Airways (PG)

PG flights are bookable on points through JAL, CX, EY and AB.

JAL
Required Mileage: Transferable from SPG. JAL uses a distance based award chart and allows up to a maximum of 7 stopovers (8 segments). To figure out how many points you will need, add up the total amount of miles that will be flown (can do this on GCMap.com) and then find the appropriate row in the award chart (http://www.ar.jal.com/ar/en/jalmile/use/partner_air/p_jmb/jmb_mile_ar.html). If you are traveling before 3/31/2017 there is a promotion for trips up to 4,000 miles (see http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/pg_discount/index_en.html for reduced mileage rates). The promotion makes JAL the best award redemption option for PG flights.

Booking the Flight: The only way to find out if there is availability on the flight that you want is to call JAL. Recommended that you do so before transferring points. JAL doesn't allow you to hold a reservation so you have to hope that the flight doesn't get booked up while you're waiting for the point transfer to go through. Once the points post to your JAL account, call JAL back to book.
+1 800-525-3663 (5:00 - 18:00 PT) press 1 - 4 - JAL membership number - # - pin - # - 0 (for human or 1 for computer search)

Traveling with Infant: Tell JAL that you are flying with a lap child. They will put the infant on the reservation, but they will also tell you that you need to call PG directly to get the infant's ticket issued and pay for any taxes etc. JAL will only charge you for the adults on the reservation. Unless you speak Thai, calling PG won't work (when you press 9 for English when calling any of the Asian offices, the message will tell you to go to their website, and the office in Germany can't issue tickets). To add the infant, send an email to reservation@bangkokair.com with your confirmation number and tell them you want to have the lap infant's ticket issued. They will email you back with the price (data point: it was ~$96USD for CNX-USM-HKG for me) and ask you to reply with your cc info split into two separate emails for security (one email with first 8 digits, exp. and name on card, second email with last 8 digits, cvv, and billing address). I believe they only take Visa or MC. You'll then get an email back with confirmation.

Baggage Allowance: Economy passengers are allowed 20kg, infants (and dolls) are allowed 10kg. Excess weight on domestic flights will incur a charge of 80thb ($2.25ish) per kilo. International overage fee chart can be found here. Join the PG FlyingBonus program to receive an additional 10kg.

Contacting PG: In general, if you have any questions, the only way to speak with them in English besides email is PG Live Chat. You can find the link if you log in to your Flyer Bonus account. Chat reps are very helpful.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO PAY (JAL AND PG) WITH A CC BELONGING TO SOMEONE THAT IS TRAVELING ON THE ITINERARY. PG WILL SOMETIMES ASK YOU TO SHOW THE CC USED TO PAY FOR THE TRIP WHEN YOU CHECK IN, AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DENY BOARDING IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT.

Are you 119 years old?

תפסת מרובה לא תפסת

But I'm all for hectic trips. Just plan properly in advance and you'll be fine IMHO.

I have traveller's itch. This might be the last time I can get some vacation time so I'm trying to get a lot done.
If this is your last trip don't make it to Hua Hin and BKK.  Nothing special there IMHO.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Whats your suggestion for a "last trip"?
(been to Kauai, Maui etc)
Not that its my last trip chas visholom. Just last trip for a while. I hope to take many more, but I'm going during peak season and this was the only availability I could find across the pacific.

In Asia/Pacific I think AKL/BOB/CNX/HKG/MLE/PEK/PVG/SIN/SYD all come to mind before BKK.

Australia: woke up a few weeks ago. No availability left on AA or UA miles
China: Cold in the winter
Singapore: considered it but looking for warmer weather
Male: couldnt find two seats (gotta take the wife with me!)

All those places sound awesome. Just not for a winter time trip with little advance planning   :'(

Sounds more like you should hire an award ticket finding service.
Or ask/offer a reward to a DDF'er.

+1. Did just that. Could not find me tickets to Male or any other exotic locales. Gary is not all that. One poshite yid with an expertflyer account is just as good. Flying during winter break is always a losing proposition. The woes of graduate school.

Lol, now I'm curious to see what Gary can't do.  Post (again?) in the thread linked to above with all variables.

It would be for the first time and I don't want to post in the thread linked above because im already booked to bkk and I dont want people to unnecessarily make an effort to find me tickets when i'm already stuck with what I got (I don't have the status to make those pesky change fees go away, yes that is jealousy)

Need advice on upcoming trip:

I am flying into BKK on december 25th, spending the day in Bangkok (picking up some kosher food and checking out the city).
I am then going to drive to Hua Hin where I will be staying at the Hyatt for three days courtesy of UR points. I would love to stay there for my entire trip but there is no availability for dec 28-29 (friday, shabbos) so I am going to have to find a different (non chain non points CHAS VISHOLOM) hotel for shabbos.
I then have a flight sunday morning from BKK-HKG-NRT-ORD-PHL.

1. Is it worth it to rent a car and how hard is it to drive in thailand (british driving)? What rental company is good? Which credit card gives best protection?
2. What is there to see and do in Bangkok besides for kosher chabad house?
3.  (I would like to do some hiking as well as thailand stuff like elephant rides etc)?
4.
5. Would you recommend staying in Hua Hin or Bangkok for shabbos?
6.
7. If we were to stay in Bangkok for shabbos what hotel do you recommend (preferably an SPG or Hyatt)?

PS. Is there any way to get a free message when we come in tuesday morning on thai first class from FCO? I have heard some people say that I can get a free message and some people say that I will not have access to the lounge.

Thanks!

1. never rent a car in bangkok. its not worth it. 1- you wont find parking. 2- very dangerous driving there - 3 -cabs are easier, cheaper, and all over the place.  never do a set rate, always the meter, if not take the next taxi or the next until u get one. however cheap you think it is itll always be WAY cheaper on the meter. try learning how to say your destination in Thai, otherwise he'll try to rip u off. (if you need help with some directions and names/numbers in thai, just ask and i can help you out.

2. Besides Chabad, there are plenty of marketplaces, the Palace, the floating Market, theres kao sahn rd. (next to chabad) -

3. about 2 hours from bangkok is Kanchanaburi. there you can see the tiger temple (its not a temple) and elephant riding, bamboo rafting, cool water falls, safari, and some other cool stuff they have. - in a diff direction ( i think) about 1.5 hours is zip lining - really cool place, check out online flight of the gibbon.  and choose bangkok. they have another one in CNX which is better.

5. ive never been to Hua Hin but im guessing Bangkok would be better, since you can have a normal shabbos there (if thats what your looking for) with free meals at Chabad (and a donation if u can :) ) and very nice shabbos atmosphere there.

7. Never stayed at a hotel there, but if you stay in the sukhumvit area theres a shul (chabad) on soi 22 and shabbos they have meals there. As well as in the Shangri-La hotel theres a minyan and meals. Otherwise you can order from the main Chabad house food before shabbos or in general and theres a THB150 fee for delivery  ($4.70)

PS. if you dont manage to get a free massage, then when u get into BKK itll be only THB 100 ($3.25) for a half hour (practically free)

A bit late but renting a car is a huge mistake in BKK.

I'd sooner rent a bus in Manhattan...

Thank you so much Cbs for your extensive instructions and advice. Finally somebody willing to address my actual questions instead of commenting on my vacation choices.
Platinum: I would only be in BKK for a few hours. The real reason to rent a car would be to drive down to Hua Hin and then to have that car throughout my stay in Hua Hin so that I can drive around and check out the countryside. Whats it like driving on the country roads in thailand is more my question than anything else.

Still not worth it. It's probably cheaper for you to go into town (near chabad), and find a driver that will take you around in hua hin for the day. That's obviously only if ur going for one day there. You could probably find for 2000 baht.. Like $65.

But otherwise I've driven a car in country side roads there. A place called Suphanburi, and it was fine. It's empty roads. I actually learned shift stick there.
(remember it's left side driving)

I'm actually going to be in hua hin for at least 3 days. Would it be worth it to hire a driver while we are in BKK for the first day to take us around BKK and then drive us to Hua Hin where we can rent a car there?

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Chaing Mai in late December and I have several questions:

1) If I have the United Club card can I access *A lounges operated by other airlines?

2) Does anyone have a hotel at BKK they can personally recommend for a overnight stay?

3) How strict is Thai immigration about food being brought in from the US? I would like to bring food for Shabbos, including meat.

4) If I want to make my own Shabbos meals is there a place in Chaing Mai I can buy food from?

Thanks

If you have a Boarding pass for travel on a Star Alliance flight departing from the airport in which the lounge is located you could access the lounge.
