Inter-Thailand Flights   Bangkok Airways (PG)

PG flights are bookable on points through JAL, CX, EY and AB.

JAL
Required Mileage: Transferable from SPG. JAL uses a distance based award chart and allows up to a maximum of 7 stopovers (8 segments). To figure out how many points you will need, add up the total amount of miles that will be flown (can do this on GCMap.com) and then find the appropriate row in the award chart (http://www.ar.jal.com/ar/en/jalmile/use/partner_air/p_jmb/jmb_mile_ar.html). If you are traveling before 3/31/2017 there is a promotion for trips up to 4,000 miles (see http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/pg_discount/index_en.html for reduced mileage rates). The promotion makes JAL the best award redemption option for PG flights.

Booking the Flight: The only way to find out if there is availability on the flight that you want is to call JAL. Recommended that you do so before transferring points. JAL doesn't allow you to hold a reservation so you have to hope that the flight doesn't get booked up while you're waiting for the point transfer to go through. Once the points post to your JAL account, call JAL back to book.
+1 800-525-3663 (5:00 - 18:00 PT) press 1 - 4 - JAL membership number - # - pin - # - 0 (for human or 1 for computer search)

Traveling with Infant: Tell JAL that you are flying with a lap child. They will put the infant on the reservation, but they will also tell you that you need to call PG directly to get the infant's ticket issued and pay for any taxes etc. JAL will only charge you for the adults on the reservation. Unless you speak Thai, calling PG won't work (when you press 9 for English when calling any of the Asian offices, the message will tell you to go to their website, and the office in Germany can't issue tickets). To add the infant, send an email to reservation@bangkokair.com with your confirmation number and tell them you want to have the lap infant's ticket issued. They will email you back with the price (data point: it was ~$96USD for CNX-USM-HKG for me) and ask you to reply with your cc info split into two separate emails for security (one email with first 8 digits, exp. and name on card, second email with last 8 digits, cvv, and billing address). I believe they only take Visa or MC. You'll then get an email back with confirmation.

Baggage Allowance: Economy passengers are allowed 20kg, infants (and dolls) are allowed 10kg. Excess weight on domestic flights will incur a charge of 80thb ($2.25ish) per kilo. International overage fee chart can be found here. Join the PG FlyingBonus program to receive an additional 10kg.

Contacting PG: In general, if you have any questions, the only way to speak with them in English besides email is PG Live Chat. You can find the link if you log in to your Flyer Bonus account. Chat reps are very helpful.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO PAY (JAL AND PG) WITH A CC BELONGING TO SOMEONE THAT IS TRAVELING ON THE ITINERARY. PG WILL SOMETIMES ASK YOU TO SHOW THE CC USED TO PAY FOR THE TRIP WHEN YOU CHECK IN, AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DENY BOARDING IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT.

@ChikkyMonkey -- do you think its worth the three hour trek to Pai just for the elephant riding?

Couple quick thoughts:
Arriving late in MLE means having to stay the night on the mainland or someplace very close... Because most resorts require seaplane which operates only during daytime hours...

Definitely recommend deciding in advance which islands in Phuket area you're interested and go straight there... Israelis love the market scene in hkt...

5 days might be long but I've stayed more and found lots of things to do... If you like relaxing you can go to Pai about 3 hr drive from chiang Mai and spend a night or two there.. Very chilled village for backpackers in the mountains.. Great place to rent scooters and explore the surrounding areas.

I also recommend going elephant rising there as its much less formal... U can go bareback (bit painful) and u can have a great time in the Pai river with the elephants... Thom's Pai elephant camp..

The drive up there is very nice... If you do rent a car be careful!

They have hot springs there as well
what about shabb in bkk ?? whats thebest place to stay near chabad??

How long will you be there for? I would say if going there you definitely wanna spend the night. The elephant camp is great, it's very small and they'll gear it towards you, we took a 2 hour ride, but after a while it gets quite painful so I asked to go straight to the river to get wet with the elephants... check out this for pics of the ride:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g303916-d1391314-Reviews-Thom_s_Pai_Elephant_Camp-Pai_Mae_Hong_Son_Province.html

Renting motor bikes there is a must.. it's a beautifully chilled area where you can bike relax, go into a cafe for a drink... there are some israelis as well depending on what time of year you visit.

I never bothered staying in bkk for shabbos. Not crazy over it.. personally I would even skip BKK, it's a typical large asian city... hot, muggy, and not much else... I've been there a few times.. but I much prefer other places. I've stayed at the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit great hotel but far from chabad... also stayed at Le Meridien also nice hotel (not as big as Sheraton) as well as some others...

Just ticketed our Thailand/Maldives Vacation(posting this in Thailand and maldives thread) b/w December 22nd and January 7th all in J. Keep in mind this is during high season for both of these locations so availability is scarce but I would appreciate any feedback tips on how to make it better. Also note that I had a one way to HNL set but cancelled it in exchange for the BKK-MLE on SQ biz instead of taking a raunchy Sri Lanka air economy flight. The Itinerary is below:

EWR - MXP(UA)- Depart 12/22
MXP - BKK(TG) - Arrive 12/24 6 AM- Fly to HKT and spend 3 nights and then fly to CNX and spend 5 nights there
BKK - SIN(SQ)- Depart 1/1/14
SIN - MLE(SQ)Arrive in MLE 1/1 at 11PM :-[- any thoughts on where to stay or go straight to resort which I didn't book yet
MLE - SIN(SQ)Depart 11:30 PM 1/5
SIN - BKK(SQ)
BKK - ZRH(TG)- Will have a full day in BKK before taking the midnight flight back home.
ZRH - EWR(UA)- Arrive

Following up on the above, I had to change up the reservation and pull it back 1 week in order to have availability at the Conrad MLE so my MLE leg will come first and then Thailand. I'll post info on that in the MLE thread.

With regards to Thailand, I was thinking 4 nights at the Conrad Koh Samui, then a flight to HKT and spending 3 nights there, before another flight to CNX for 3 or 4 nights before flying to bkk for the flight home to NY. Only downside is that I won't spend shabbat in cnx which I heard was cool and I'll also miss the sunday market.

So as of now we will spend 5 nights at MLE, 4 at USM, 3 in HKT, and 4 in CNX and fly on too many segments to count...you guys think this is too much??

Thanks!

Going for 5 nights, Wed-Mon, in May (will Israelis be there then?)

Renting motorbikes sounds quite delightful... maybe we'll go there thursday and stay overnight... Recommendation  for where to stay?

Keep in mind that most resorts on phi phi are not on the main part of the island which means you will have to catch a longboat everytime you want to go out. (But at least you'll be in a much quiter setting)

Must dos in phi phi:
Watch the fire show (weds night is the biggest IIRC)
Scuba (discovery is just $100)
Maya bay day trip (highlite of your trip)
Kayak to monkey beach (not a must, but nice if the monkeys come out to play)
Thai boxing (in the center of the island, you can't miss it)
Go up to the lookouts (sunrise is beautiful up there)

Thank you Suave! appreciate the response. I thought that Koh Phi Phi was one island and for ex- the holiday inn is on Ko phi phi? Was I wrong?

If the resorts are all the way on the other side- shouldn't we stay at a nice resort in patong close to chabad and just take the ferry out to phi phi...

http://www.krabihotelvilla.com/kophiphi/map.htm look at where holiday inn is in relation the the main beaches. That trip requires a longboat. No cars or mopeds on the island.

But it's not such a big deal...if the vacation is about chilling and relaxing. But if you want adventure then stay in the main area.

We'll be in MLE for 5 nights and in USM for 4 nights basically relaxing before that so we may want to be around the action...any recommendations of where to stay in phi phi if that's what we're looking for? Should we just stay in patong?

Also- didn't really think about this one but what about Krabi?

what about shabb in bkk ?? whats thebest place to stay near chabad??

We stayed in The Davis Hotel when we were there in Dec 2011.  It's a 10 minutes walk from Beis Elisheva (Chabad).  I booked the hotel on Orbitz as they had a free upgrade promotion going on.  I also requested 2 beds.  The total for the upgraded room would have been $58/night.  Turns out when we got there they only had single bed rooms available.  I pointed out that I specifically requested 2 beds.  They apologized for their mistake and put us in the only 2-bed room they had: The 2-bedroom suite (aka, the nicest room in the house).  Of course, they did not charge us for the mistake.

The Davis hotel is a really nice hotel, I'd say about 4 to 5 stars.  Some pictures of the hotel/room are below.

Also, they are familiar with Shabbos at the hotel and make it easy to get up and down to your room via the stairs.  The main doors are not electric either.

We'll be in MLE for 5 nights and in USM for 4 nights basically relaxing before that so we may want to be around the action...any recommendations of where to stay in phi phi if that's what we're looking for? Should we just stay in patong?

Also- didn't really think about this one but what about Krabi?
Any resort in or near the main area should be fine. There are many.
If you need help finding one, let me know.

I have not been to krabi unfortunately, so can not say anything.
