Inter-Thailand Flights   Bangkok Airways (PG)

PG flights are bookable on points through JAL, CX, EY and AB.

JAL
Required Mileage: Transferable from SPG. JAL uses a distance based award chart and allows up to a maximum of 7 stopovers (8 segments). To figure out how many points you will need, add up the total amount of miles that will be flown (can do this on GCMap.com) and then find the appropriate row in the award chart (http://www.ar.jal.com/ar/en/jalmile/use/partner_air/p_jmb/jmb_mile_ar.html). If you are traveling before 3/31/2017 there is a promotion for trips up to 4,000 miles (see http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/pg_discount/index_en.html for reduced mileage rates). The promotion makes JAL the best award redemption option for PG flights.

Booking the Flight: The only way to find out if there is availability on the flight that you want is to call JAL. Recommended that you do so before transferring points. JAL doesn't allow you to hold a reservation so you have to hope that the flight doesn't get booked up while you're waiting for the point transfer to go through. Once the points post to your JAL account, call JAL back to book.
+1 800-525-3663 (5:00 - 18:00 PT) press 1 - 4 - JAL membership number - # - pin - # - 0 (for human or 1 for computer search)

Traveling with Infant: Tell JAL that you are flying with a lap child. They will put the infant on the reservation, but they will also tell you that you need to call PG directly to get the infant's ticket issued and pay for any taxes etc. JAL will only charge you for the adults on the reservation. Unless you speak Thai, calling PG won't work (when you press 9 for English when calling any of the Asian offices, the message will tell you to go to their website, and the office in Germany can't issue tickets). To add the infant, send an email to reservation@bangkokair.com with your confirmation number and tell them you want to have the lap infant's ticket issued. They will email you back with the price (data point: it was ~$96USD for CNX-USM-HKG for me) and ask you to reply with your cc info split into two separate emails for security (one email with first 8 digits, exp. and name on card, second email with last 8 digits, cvv, and billing address). I believe they only take Visa or MC. You'll then get an email back with confirmation.

Baggage Allowance: Economy passengers are allowed 20kg, infants (and dolls) are allowed 10kg. Excess weight on domestic flights will incur a charge of 80thb ($2.25ish) per kilo. International overage fee chart can be found here. Join the PG FlyingBonus program to receive an additional 10kg.

Contacting PG: In general, if you have any questions, the only way to speak with them in English besides email is PG Live Chat. You can find the link if you log in to your Flyer Bonus account. Chat reps are very helpful.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO PAY (JAL AND PG) WITH A CC BELONGING TO SOMEONE THAT IS TRAVELING ON THE ITINERARY. PG WILL SOMETIMES ASK YOU TO SHOW THE CC USED TO PAY FOR THE TRIP WHEN YOU CHECK IN, AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DENY BOARDING IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT.

Not always, also as you get closer to travel date, air asia goes up... I've many times booked with bangkok air and taking into consideration the baggage fees with Air Asia, it came out the same...

What about Bangkok Airways (PG), does it go up as travel date approaches?

PG is the only airline that flies to from CNX-USM non-stop and charge an arm and a leg.

I'm looking at paying $250 p/p for the one way  :o

DM airport is closer to the city then BKK - the meter is about 190 to DM and up to 250 +highway tolls 70 (if you take the highway) for BKK.

DM is not a bad airport although BKK is much bigger and nicer.
Airasia as i see your flying - they are very picky with luggage weight - check their website and act accordingly otherwise ull end up paying a lot

Everybody is going to have carry ons but share on checked bag..........I doubt this is a good idea. They give no leeway with baggage weight. :(

Re Samui prices are always high.. Bangkok airways owns the airport there so they have a monopoly... I'm mostly referring to bkk-cnx routes and other cities aside from Samui

thats good. if u wait till last minute ull end up paying what i paid. only when i got to CNX i went to buy the USM flight and non stop was sold out , so i had to fly thai air to BKK (i had a lot of bags so with *G it worked out) and left some bags there, had to stay the night in BKK then leave to airport at 4:30 am and fly Nok air to Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport (NST) from there take a bus an hour and a half to Surratthani dock and take an hour + boat ride to Samui! all for $250

Always book in advance if you know the dates forsure

With Bangkok Airways, many times business class is only marginally more expensive than coach so once youre paying $$$, may be worth upgrading to biz.

If you can stomach the Thailand kosher meals, youll get a snack box (sandwich +fruit) if you request (can be done online).

Yikes. You're putting the $250 into perspective.

I was also thinking of redeeming an award from CNX-HKT and making my way either by cash ticket from HKT-USM, or booking a cash ticket from CNX to one of the airports closer than HKT (on mobile and don't recall the names) and then renting a car and driving.

Decisions,  decisions.

Also, how much is the ferry?

Can the ferry transport cars?

Can you rent a car at either of those small airports close to USM?

We transported a car from USM to Don sak via ferry. (and I scored a foot massage on the ferry)

I have not read the entire thread - but i remember flying OW - BKK-USM for $120

That is the official price i found on the website.

IIRC, We hired a 12pax van with driver from Chaweng (the Israeli travel agency near the chabad house hooked it up) for about $150 to drive us (6 peeps) from Koh samui to Phuket.

my total itin if IIRC: BOM-BKK (1 day in BKK) BKK-USM (first days pesach + several days chol hamoed) USM-HKT via Ferry/Van (last days pesach in HKT) HKT-Koh Phi Phi via ferry. 2 weeks in Phi Phi i think. Ferry back to HKT - HKT-BKK flight (1 day in BKK) BKK-LON-NYC

Great - so there are definitely ferries which transport cars to and from USM, that's good to know.

Now I just need to figure out whether to:

1) skip the hassle and simply fly non-stop from CNX-USM for $275ish OW (plus taxi to Conrad);
2) fly CNX-DMK-URT/NST on AirAsia for ~$100, and then rent a car to ferry for ~$185 (but won't have to pay for taxi to Conrad);
3) fly CNX-DMK-URT/NST on AirAsia for ~$100, and then bus it to the ferry for probably $165 (plus taxi to Conrad)

Thoughts?

Great - so there are definitely ferries which transport cars to and from USM, that's good to know.

Now I just need to figure out whether to:

1) skip the hassle and simply fly non-stop from CNX-USM for $275ish OW (plus taxi to Conrad);
2) fly CNX-DMK-URT/NST on AirAsia for ~$100, and then rent a car to ferry for ~$185 (but won't have to pay for taxi to Conrad);
3) fly CNX-DMK-URT/NST on AirAsia for ~$100, and then bus it to the ferry for probably $165 (plus taxi to Conrad)

Thoughts?

Try taking a flight from CNX-HKT-USM. See what the prices and options are.
