Inter-Thailand Flights   Bangkok Airways (PG)

PG flights are bookable on points through JAL, CX, EY and AB.

JAL
Required Mileage: Transferable from SPG. JAL uses a distance based award chart and allows up to a maximum of 7 stopovers (8 segments). To figure out how many points you will need, add up the total amount of miles that will be flown (can do this on GCMap.com) and then find the appropriate row in the award chart (http://www.ar.jal.com/ar/en/jalmile/use/partner_air/p_jmb/jmb_mile_ar.html). If you are traveling before 3/31/2017 there is a promotion for trips up to 4,000 miles (see http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/pg_discount/index_en.html for reduced mileage rates). The promotion makes JAL the best award redemption option for PG flights.

Booking the Flight: The only way to find out if there is availability on the flight that you want is to call JAL. Recommended that you do so before transferring points. JAL doesn't allow you to hold a reservation so you have to hope that the flight doesn't get booked up while you're waiting for the point transfer to go through. Once the points post to your JAL account, call JAL back to book.
+1 800-525-3663 (5:00 - 18:00 PT) press 1 - 4 - JAL membership number - # - pin - # - 0 (for human or 1 for computer search)

Traveling with Infant: Tell JAL that you are flying with a lap child. They will put the infant on the reservation, but they will also tell you that you need to call PG directly to get the infant's ticket issued and pay for any taxes etc. JAL will only charge you for the adults on the reservation. Unless you speak Thai, calling PG won't work (when you press 9 for English when calling any of the Asian offices, the message will tell you to go to their website, and the office in Germany can't issue tickets). To add the infant, send an email to reservation@bangkokair.com with your confirmation number and tell them you want to have the lap infant's ticket issued. They will email you back with the price (data point: it was ~$96USD for CNX-USM-HKG for me) and ask you to reply with your cc info split into two separate emails for security (one email with first 8 digits, exp. and name on card, second email with last 8 digits, cvv, and billing address). I believe they only take Visa or MC. You'll then get an email back with confirmation.

Baggage Allowance: Economy passengers are allowed 20kg, infants (and dolls) are allowed 10kg. Excess weight on domestic flights will incur a charge of 80thb ($2.25ish) per kilo. International overage fee chart can be found here. Join the PG FlyingBonus program to receive an additional 10kg.

Contacting PG: In general, if you have any questions, the only way to speak with them in English besides email is PG Live Chat. You can find the link if you log in to your Flyer Bonus account. Chat reps are very helpful.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE TO PAY (JAL AND PG) WITH A CC BELONGING TO SOMEONE THAT IS TRAVELING ON THE ITINERARY. PG WILL SOMETIMES ASK YOU TO SHOW THE CC USED TO PAY FOR THE TRIP WHEN YOU CHECK IN, AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DENY BOARDING IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT.

So, back to Air Asia.

I can arrive BBK 5:30am Sunday.

Air Asia has a flight at 6:40am. Is that too tight?
Otherwise the next flight is at 10:30am.

Definitely too early, you have to clear customs...

Be sure to check Bangkokair as well... very good airline slightly higher class than Air Asia...

You really don't need a lot of time everywhere.. the animals are near each other. monkey shows run basically on the hour, elephant show if a little more tricky, plan around it if you want to go.

My priority list would be:
Tigers
Elephants riding/Bamboo rafting
Monkeys

Night market is great...

Leave some free time to just hang out and take it easy

Tailoring is very fast, they measure you and you choose your fabrics. They can ship to the US for you..

At the Mai se (sp?) Elephant show (highly recommended how and incredibly inexpensive!)  you ride on a carriage on top of the elephant.  I assume at the other place you ride directly on the elephant?

Also at the Tiger Kingdom they have like 4 different sizes of tigers.  Infants were the most expensive, then the kids, and the medium and large tigers were the cheapest.  They also sell combo packages.
We did the mediums.

They also sell a CD of your photographs for 300THB (~$10) but we just brought our camera into the cage where there are 3 people helping you out for the 15 minutes you get in there.  There were more than happy taking hundreds of pictures with my camera in exchange for a tip.  I gave them 100THB and they seemed very happy with it.

Maese Elephant camp (http://www.maesaelephantcamp.com/ for show times)

I think it's worth paying the photographer fees at the Tiger Kingdom, they are not professional photographers but they got to know their camera settings (Nikon d90 when I was there) and there pictures were fabulous (the ones they took with my similar nikon weren't as good)... I would recommend the biggest tigers, it's unbelievable.. infants are good for families..

At all elephant camps you ride on a saddle/carriage... riding directly is only available in places where they teach you to be a mahout..

Thanks for all the help.

Got the BKK-CNX-BKK in TG J added to my ticket so if all goes well ill arrive CNX 9:05am Sunday and depart Monday 5:05pm.

Do I have to pick up my bags in BKK, clear customs and recheck them or will TG check them all the way to CNX and clear customs there?

I flew Air Asia which has no interlining, so we had to claim and recheck.  Not sure about TG-TG.
On the outbound we flew TG from CNX and checked through BKK to HKG on CX.

Chikky, you mentioned going to the tigers earlier.
Seems like the most realistic time for the elephant show is 1:30pm. Is it pushing it to see the tigers before then?
Or, I should I go afterwards? Or Monday morning?

The question is on the inbound, even with interlining, do you have to clear customs at first point of entry? (Such is the case if you're flying for example, SYD-LAX-JFK. You pick up your bags in LAX, clear customs and then drop them off. You don't need to re-check, the tags have your destination on them, just gotta clear customs. )

The other locations are nicer, more dense jungle, mountains, rivers etc..

You definitely have plenty of time to go to the tiger place before the elephant show.. Hopefully won't have too long of a wait time.

I advise going there first thing in the morning, as the day progresses they get sleepy and the trainers have to poke them to move around... Also it's less hot and pictures are better as you won't necessarily be in straight sunlight.

Awesome to have first hand experience.
Just reading again through the wealth of info and came across my post,
Wow, you really know that part of the world down to the last detail...
Really enjoy reading.
One day ill get there...
:D
So now I'm looking at doing:
Tiger Kingdom
Elephant Show
Elephant Riding, Bamboo Rafts (Chikky, you have the info on the other place?)
Monkey Show
Snake show (worth seeing?)
Xcentre-Bungee Jumping, off road bikes/buggies
Sunday night market
(Can I do all the above on Sunday? Arriving 9:05am, drop my stuff off and I'm on my way..)
Long tail boat rides (worth doing?)
Perhaps just checking out the city, on a tuk tuk, rent a scooter (anywhere specific?)
Get some clothes tailored.

Long neck tribe doesn't look so interesting.

Anything else that you would add/subtract/do instead?

I don't think you'll be able to do all that.

Let's say you're with your bags in a taxi that you've negotiated a rate for the entire day (hopefully for less than 900 THB) at 9:30am.
(Don't forget to grab some free sim cards at baggage claim!)
Allow 90 minutes to go to the hotel, checkin, put your stuff in the room, and then taxi out to the animal parks.
Now it's 11am.
Do you have food with you are do you want to eat breakfast/lunch at Chabad (prices are insanely cheap like $1 pancakes, $4 burgers, great lachmaniot and fruit shakes and etc and the food is pretty good)

Tiger Kingdom-Allow 1 hour
Elephant Show-Allow 1 hour
Elephant Riding-Allow 1 hour at 1:30pm only.
Bamboo Rafts-Didn't do this, but maybe 2 hours?
Monkey Show-Allow 30 minutes
Snake show (worth seeing?)-Didn't do this but maybe 30 minutes?
Xcentre-Bungee Jumping, off road bikes/buggies-Didn't do this but that's got to take some good time I'd imagine.

You'll want to get dinner at chabad at some point.

Sunday night market (Ratchadamonoen Road in the old city) starts at 5pm, but peak hours are like 7-11pm I think.  You can take a tuktuk there or a red shared ride open van.

You also don't want to miss the night market on Changklan road between Chabad and the hotel.

Long tail boat rides (worth doing?)-Didn't do that or the long-neck.

Get some clothes tailored-try to find out where a good place is, maybe the shliach knows?

Truth is I have most of Monday as well. Just thought if a bunch of things are together, see how many I can do.

I'll bring some some food on the plane with me, eat a big breakfast BKK-CNX and with a couple of snacks ill be good until dinner.
I was thinking similarly, arrive at animal parks at 11.
First, Tiger Kingdom.
Monkey Show and snake show?
Elephant Show 1:30
Elephant Ride and bamboo rafts.(gotta find out from Chikky how far that is)

Seems like that would already take me until 5:00-5:30

Head back to town, chabad house, mincha/maariv, maybe learn something eat dinner.

The regular night market starts the same time as Sunday market? Thinking to go to regular one then to Sunday market (min hakal el hakovod).
Then crash in my Junior suite at the LM (Thanks Dan!!!)

Monday:
Early rise (jet lag)
Shachris
Breakfast
Xcentre (maybe forget breakfast...)

Depending on how long that takes, back to town, tailor and if I have more time explore the city before picking up some food and heading to the airport.

Where am I right/wrong?

Sounds awesome!

Enjoy the suite and the club-they are awesome.  And maybe leave some time for the nice infinity pool.

There are also lots of ancient temples and palaces, etc.  We saw one for 5 minutes to be yotzei zain.

Can I negotiate at rate for a taxi for the day at the airport?

A day means they'll drive me everywhere, wait there and continue on at my pace?

Has anyone on this forum had clothing (suits, shirts) made for them? If yes, what did you get, how much did you pay and were you satisfied with what you got? Thanks
