See here for a map of airports connecting to IGU and IGR  forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=3052.msg1363094#msg1363094

When searching for award availability search first to connecting  airports as for example, from NYC VIA Brazil search

JFK-GIG  on Tam (BA.com) and/or AA (AA.com)
JFK- GRU AA, Delta
EWR-GRU UA
COPA airlines flies thru Panama City and GRU (usually 2 stops)

Argentina options

Aerolineas Argentina JFK-EZE
LAN Argentina

Hotels
Belmont in the Brazilian side of the park
Sheraton Iguazu in the Argentina side of the park. (SPG)
Park Hyatt Iguacu Falls coming soon!

Major Activities

The Argentinian side is more up-close and personal.
You will need to walk both the upper and lower trail on the Argentina side. The upper will take about an hour, the lower about 2. Make sure to do the boat ride on the lower trail for the most awesome views. You will get soaked so take along a ziplock for your camera. You can also take the train to Devils point

The Brazillian side is more of a panorama view.
On the Brazil side at the falls there is less walking as you are not next to the falls like on the Argentina side but rather across the river from them. You will take a tram to the start of the trail on the Brazil side and just walk along side the falls, starting from the pink hotel till the end. When you get to the end is when you will be totally blown away. Walk out on the boardwalk and you will get the most amazing view of the falls.

Bird park well worth about an hour

Helicopter tour on the Brazillian side (Argentina band it as its not Eco friendly)

There is a  huge dam you can tour that powers all of Paraguay and huge portions of Brazil and Argentina

Airport Transfer Options

Cabs are available at fairly cheap from both airports to the park and hotels (cross border too)

Would this pose a visa problem?  I was reading that upon exiting Brazil you need to have a paper they gave you when you came in.  Would they give you that at the land crossing in Iguazu so we could fly out of Rio back to LA?

Yeah sure it's a regular border crossing, it's just optional to stop. If you you do stop you need to walk to the office and get stamped etc. they will give you whatever you need. Don't forget to get a visa in advance btw or they won't let u in.

So it's kinda like driving to Tijuana from San Diego: no one will stop you from entering Mexico; you just slow done like you were going through a toll booth.

Yeah, I just read about the visas online.  $160 for Argentina and another $160 for Brazil.  For 2 people that's $640 just for visas.  Man, they don't like Americans much down there.

It's a good thing the flights and hotels are all on points, but still...

At that crossing you will not have any problems. They don't even stamp you in unless you are staying overnight or ask them for one. Most cars just drive right thru.

Online it says they're makpid on non-packaged goods.  If we bring bread, peanut butter and jelly, or similar items from BA to Iguazu, drive across the boarder, and stop to get passports stamped, you're saying they won't care we have food?

When I came into Argentina thru Iguazu they did not charge me a visa fee, as they only charged it when entering BA thru an international destination. Not sure if still like that but if it is doing it that way can save u money.

But Brazil charges for visas so of I'm going go BA first it won't help. Plus I believe they changed the law in Argentina and now change regardless of method of entry.

regardless of method of entry into the city of BA but if you enter into a different city that could be different. Don't know just speculating.

Going to Rio the Iguazu then BA may save you the Argentina visa not the Brazil one of course.

I found this:  :(

As of January 7, 2013, the reciprocity fee will be extended to all border crossings of Argentina: maritime, fluvial, terrestrial and aerial.

Yes however I did have to buy visas for Paraguay, which was 100 x 2. :(

If you go to Rio btw good luck on hotels. The only thing I ended up finding was the Sheraton Rio which was thankfully open on C and P.

The Sheraton Rio is not open to C&P now, its 12k a night.  The Sheraton Barra is for 6k+$110.  It just seems a bit far away from everything....

Was the Sheraton Rio nice?

Sheraton Rio is very nice. A bit old but the stunning ocean views and balcony more than make up for it. It is the only hotel on the water and is walking distance (by day) from Leblon and Ipanema.

In regard to Iguazu where do you plan on staying? (if you are not staying at the Sheraton they may kick you off of DDF!)

Ok good. You will need to walk both the upper and lower trail on the Argentina side. The upper will take about an hour, the lower about 2. Make sure to do the boat ride on the lower trail for the most awesome views. You will get soaked so take along a ziplock for your camera. When you get to the end is when you will be totally blown away. Walk out on the boardwalk and you will get the most amazing view of the falls. (I will post a pic for you to see when I have a chance).

When you are done with the falls there is a nice birdpark well worth about an hour. Another thing to do which I found was money well spent was a helicpoter ride over the falls. The falls are really big so the only way to really take in all 280 waterfalls is from the air. Cost me 100 dollars for about 20 minutes and if you are going that far do not miss it.
