Flight options.

There is 2 Airports serving Iguassu (Iguazu, Iguaçu) Falls, IGU on the Brazilian side and IGR on the Argentinian side.
See here for a map of airports connecting to IGU and IGR  forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=3052.msg1363094#msg1363094

When searching for award availability search first to connecting  airports as for example, from NYC VIA Brazil search

LAN thru Lima Peru (cheapest option usually) Oneworld (BA Shows Lan)
JFK-GIG  on Tam (BA.com) and/or AA (AA.com)
JFK- GRU AA, Delta
EWR-GRU UA
COPA airlines flies thru Panama City and GRU (usually 2 stops)

Argentina options

Aerolineas Argentina JFK-EZE
LAN Argentina

Hotels
Belmont in the Brazilian side of the park
Sheraton Iguazu in the Argentina side of the park. (SPG)
Park Hyatt Iguacu Falls coming soon!

Major Activities

The Argentinian side is more up-close and personal.
You will need to walk both the upper and lower trail on the Argentina side. The upper will take about an hour, the lower about 2. Make sure to do the boat ride on the lower trail for the most awesome views. You will get soaked so take along a ziplock for your camera. You can also take the train to Devils point

The Brazillian side is more of a panorama view.
On the Brazil side at the falls there is less walking as you are not next to the falls like on the Argentina side but rather across the river from them. You will take a tram to the start of the trail on the Brazil side and just walk along side the falls, starting from the pink hotel till the end. When you get to the end is when you will be totally blown away. Walk out on the boardwalk and you will get the most amazing view of the falls.

Bird park well worth about an hour

Helicopter tour on the Brazillian side (Argentina band it as its not Eco friendly)

There is a  huge dam you can tour that powers all of Paraguay and huge portions of Brazil and Argentina

Airport Transfer Options

Cabs are available at fairly cheap from both airports to the park and hotels (cross border too)

Is there any place to store luggage on the Brazilian side if arriving at IGU?

Yes. There are lockers in IGU  and at the National Park entrance which is what I did.

Anyone want to outline and wikify the intra-Brazil/intra-Argentina flights and miles options to get to Iguazu?

Avios usually the best from Argentina (or Peru or other countries) when flying into IGR. Gol (and sometimes TAM) are cheap for flights to/from IRU, although avios can obviously be used there as well.

Can I check availability for Dec 28 Aerolineas Argentinas online? (It's bookable with DL, correct?)

Those should come up on ba.com, correct?

You can check on EF. Bookable with DL. Don't forget that you can book Gol with DL as well.

They will but you will likely need to book on the phone.

TAM artificially raises their prices when you check from out of Brazil. I have found most times TAM to have cheaper prices than GOL when booking inside Brazil. If you will happen to be in Curitiba, Azul (great airline) always advertises cheap like $40-50 fares from there to IGU. Intra Brazil avios flights you need to PUTPAC to book.

When I was there last year, you were able to check for Aerolineas Argentinas on flying blue website, and flying blue is also partners with GOL.

Azul is also bookable with UA miles online.

At 12,500 ua miles, not usually worth it for a short flight such as GRU-IGU or CWB-IGU. You can get a lot more value from it, I used 12,500 to go from south to north.

You can have a stopover and 2 open jaws. Makes it a much better deal.

DL to book GOL would be done over the phone? 12.5K each way? Stopover rules?

I think DL eliminated the free stopover on award tickets this week.

Here's what I have so far. This is all traveling with 2 kids (Yes, I know I should have done this before they discontinued TAM F)
I found availablity on TAM Dec 24-31 in and out of GIG in business.
Sheraton Rio Thursday-?
I found flight out of IGU to GIG with a nice connection time to catch the return on 12/31.
Question is how to break up Sunday-Wednesday. I gather I want to arrive in IGU Tuesday morning. I would have full day Thu and Fri (albeit w/ kids who may or may not have slept) in GIG.

I think it would make sense to head to EZE sunday morning and then to IGU Tuesday morning-does that make sense? I don't see any mileage options for those flights-what carriers should I be looking for?

Thanks for your help

Cool, so I could still book GIG-EZE-IGU-GIG for 25K (if I found availability obviously).

Agree with doing EZE first.
Look at TAM, AR, and LAN.
