I'm assuming new card members and not new spg members, but I doubt that's the case either way

I guess it's time to create a 2nd SPG account and see if it gets targeted.

No matching. They do have challenges though.

people stay in Category One hotels for cash and points. If you do that to reach a total of 25 stays (consecutive nights don't count) then you'll be plat.

It's good for executive Club Lounge privileges, 500 bonus pts per stay, and other good perks.

How long would you hypothetically stay platinum for doing that
If you think nobody cares about you... just forget to pay your credit card bill

Many people enjoy the platinum status. It lasts for 14 months each renewal -- through Feb of the following calendar year. Also, with 5 years of Elite status, you'll achieve lifetime Gold.
With 10 years of plat status, you'll achieve lifetime platinum. Link: https://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/about/index.html?categoryId=brand.benefits.platinum#InnerPage
