That. Always. Even platinums won't get upgraded if there's no availability.
Well was there same time as someone that had platinum and he got upgraded to a suite.

Nobody is looking to offer you anything. Did you try asking?

I stayed at a SPG hotel in Baltimore a few months ago (SPG Gold) and asked for an upgrade. Got upgraded to Club level room.

a club room/floor upgrade can be ymmv. However I think that only plat will get the club lounge access. I'd choose club lounge access (usually 24/7) over a club floor.

Got rooms on club level. Nobody asked questions when I walked into the club lounge.
Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.

most club lounges are "locked" and require a card swipe in order to enter.

Booked a lowest standard rate on spg, didn't realize that they had an option of booking "spg member only hot escapes" which would have saved me 5% it would have saved me like $200 any chance of them refunding me if I call?
If you think nobody cares about you... just forget to pay your credit card bill

I checked into the Sheraton in Mahwah, with SPG gold status.  They were nasty, reluctantly upgraded to deluxe room, on a very low floor, and refused club access, no budging.  I was told last night that they the hotel is very quiet tonight.  Who can I complain to, any idea how to get club access?

I'm sure your could pay for access to the club. Why would you otherwise be entitled to club access?

Sounds like you got lucky a few times. Platinums are entitled to club access, gold members are not...cant blame them for not giving you access

Thanks, they were nice enough to cancel my existing reservation with no penalty and rebook me with the better rate that I had found

Does anyone know if I use my MIL's account to book a reservation for a Sheraton, can I use my Suite Night Awards on that reservation?

Typical sheratons. Flip a coin. Eatontown is better located I guess near the beach areas
