Apparently I'm only 2 stays away from Gold (apparently award stays count toward status).

Any idea what the cheapest SPG near NY is?

Here are Brooklyn + NY results. The Sheraton in Edison has a $128 special SPG member rate for Sept 2:

When do you need to earn it by?
Know anybody near Fort Myers, FL? You can get paid stays there for $66 a night with the current 30% off promo they are having there.

Cash options are usually at least $100.
If you decide points is the way to go, the cheapest points option is 2k points per weekend night at Category 1 properties.

You have a few months for the stays, there's no rush.
I would do some spending on an SPG card, or refer somebody to sign up using your link (earning you 5k points).

You can book 2 separate reservations/rooms for the same 1 night which would count as 2 stays earning you status.

ditto that ^^ , plus the cash and points option is often very cheap. sometimes along the lines of 3,000 points plus $30 cash for a decent sheraton.

Thanks good idea. No cat 1 near me, but earning a few points and using them for a night or 2 is a good idea. Status earned in 2014 will end 12/2015?

They usually give you through the following Feb, so you'd be gold until 2/2016. very worthwhile imo

Any suggestions for keeping points active that are about to expire?

Would making a reservation and canceling it help? Transfer points to another account?

Thanks!

Can always ask. You can also look to book it through someone who has status.
