It seems many here are just obsessed with this food thing. I just don’t get it. Anybody want to help me see the light?

Judaism places an extremely heavy weight on food.
We eat tons of it on every holiday when we defeated out enemies, and those are quite often. And when you can't use electricity that leaves prayer, learning, eating, and board games as the main events.

We don't eat it on several day a year when we were defeated (+ Yom Kippur) but we eat tons of it before and after each of those days.

Judaism also dictates down to the minutiae of exactly what kind of food we can eat, what we can't eat after eating another food, and what blessing we must say before eating it and after eating it.

There are tens of thousands of food laws that we become proficient in, is there any wonder why there are so many foodies here?

@CV we eat to serve G-D. Some people place extra emphasis on the eating part of tha. At least we are halfway in the right direction

Passover matza, bitter herbs etc. Shavuos milchigs. Chanuka latkes, donuts. Purim hamintashin. Rosh hashana Friuts and sweet foods.

Also meat, wine and challa is mandatory for every holiday think sacrifices from the temple, plus enjoyment aspect to be happy.

Almost every holiday has it's food orientation.

What's the big deal.

Some are obsessed with miles, points, electronics, cars, vacations etc.

Just add this to the pile.

What would happen if you didn't eat. You'd die. Dead people don't serve G-D very well. Hence eating enables us to serve G-D. Pretty simple logic.

but tha wouldn't call for an OBSESSION. Just eat.

The obsession can come from the fact that food is one way to serve gd. For example on the alter what are we doing...slaughtering a calf. When someone sins what does he do? Being a sacrifice of a little calf. And so on. So it seems to me a lot of judisiam is based around food. Like Dan mentioned.

I don't think it's just us. Look how many non-kosher restaurants are out there. Someone must be eating their food.

I think that its because there are such limitations on what we can't eat, its a challenge to find unique food.

I agree with cv. I think that many people use God as an excuse to be obsessed with food. I don't think this obsession has anything to do with religiosity. It may have been spawned by religion but I don't think it has anything to do with God at this point (cue up all the Chabad people to argue). In it's current state it has a lot more too do with one's boich than God

With all the restrictions, it's tougher to find a permissible obsession in Judaism that in other religions. Food fits into that role and even has the advantage that we can claim we are doing it for God, even though we are really doing it ourselves.
