Both have undergone major renovations over the past years but the Zilara had an entire new building added to it and you probably want to try and get into that one by dealing directly with the hotel to ensure that your room is in that building.

On a recent trip to Jamaica . I got a permit the last minute less then 24 hrs to arrival .
Online it can be a little complicate to nevigate. So I had one of their representatives on the phone and guided me step by step she was very helpful and patient . (It took 45 min the process) I received my permit within the hour, the fee was $10
At the end I didn’t even use it, I figured I’ll just pass the regular security line without declaring anything and just in case being stopped I’ll then present the permit .. bh no one looked no one asked ..

Here’s the info.

I did and I worked with the official department there by phone. It was a rather tedious process but in the end I was able to legally and successfully bring in my food. The week I was going, Chabad was closed so it was my only legal option.

Yeah, we got a butler suite (can't remember if it was Ziva or Zilara). Nice comfortable room and having the Butler service was a big bonus when it came to dealing with the Kosher issue (not to say that they didn't make a number of mistakes and cost us a bunch of our food...)

Do you recall if certain rooms were better than others

We made a point to get a room in the newest building. IIRC they built one a new one in the adult only hotel and redid the others. The new ones are nicer. But I've stayed in the renovated rooms and they were ok - just not as nice.

They are essentially the same hotel and share facilities. It's worth a call to them to see if you can switch it.

There's a Courtyard by Marriot that is ok by US standards. The Pega4us is the fancy local hotel and ok as well. The Spanish Court is very nice but a little out of the way of main area of New Kingston. The meat import is a bit of a hassle but I did it and was able to bring in meat. Other choices is seeing if you can get Chabad to send food to Kingston and taking your chances...  but if you're stopped you probably will have it taken away.
You stayed in Kingston?

Very accommodating with heating up food
make sure you tell them nightly don't open up your food

Also I numbered everything and told them
tonight we need 1,2,3,4
tomorrow I need 5 and 6
or I told them that morning I need tin 9 and 10 tonight at 7pm

Remind them to send you Disposable plates and Utensils

and Call when your done for them to remove the food table or it will sit outside your room all night and you don't want any insects

finally most of the soda was Coke etc. but they have some local stuff I wouldn't touch

I found the hotel to be too commercial and difficult to get simple things like fresh squeezed pineapple juice or orange juice
a lot of the there stuff comes pre processed.
I struggled getting a Avocado they tend to just have processed guacamole
