Some 7-11 are categorized as gas even ones that don't sell gas! Vanilla reloads are sold there

They let you buy VR's with a CC? The one in my neighborhood is adamnant about not accepting CC's, they flipped out on me for even asking.

Chicago and Manhattan. some take cc some dont. rumor has it not all are billed as gas station/service station. a rep told me that service station is the same as gas station for 5x freedom this cat.

just checked my last 7-11 purchase
its in califonia and the one i went to does not sell gas but its listed under gas

I can confirm the same thing. I made some small purchases at a regular 7-11 by where I live and I was given 2x points when I made the purchase with my Ink card. Under my account activity it showed up as "Auto Related." So I guess all my 7-11 spending will be done with Freedom for the next few months

With Discover, if you purchase gas at GetGo - looking to get the gasperks AND the 5% cashback - be careful. GetGo uses the same merchant code as Giant Eagle and Discover will code it as a Supermarket purchase, so no 5%. You have to call and ask them to adjust the CB credit. They did it for me nice enough but it's a pain to have to call. I would guess it's the same story with Chase Freedom if they go by the merchant code.

I can't speak for Discover but for visa (and usually mc) you can take the guessing out by going to this site:
http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/usa/supplier/NewSearch.do
and searching for any merchant that processes visa directly.

Note that I went to the same 7-eleven with different cards;
Visa always coded as gas,
Discover, gas, and
Amex coded it as groceries.

Note that a soon as the transaction posts you can go to Blueprint (Chase) or Spend Analyzer (Discover) and see what category it is listed under.

Was by Tallman 7-11, should have taken a picture, but sign basically said that as of August 5th 7-11 will be coded to not accept cc for vr, and until then the cashiers got a memo not to accept. I went to a different 7-11 and was able to buy 1 onevanilla debit but 2nd was declined, they didn't have vr at 2nd 7-11...

went to 7-11 on Long Island. They swiped my cc but computer said declined almost immediately. Seems like they are hardwired not to accept now.

The 7-11 by me doesn't even allow purchases of VR's with cash! The decline happens when they try to load the VR, before I even have my CC out.
