« on: July 16, 2013, 11:58:49 PM »
I plan on driving down to Florida next week.
What's not to be missed on the way down?
I'll be going with my wife and 1 year old daughter.

I was thinking about that, I want to stop in the DC area though so it's a bit out of the way.

Check out south of the boarder. It's between north and South Carolina.

That looks cool. I'll add it to our itinerary. Thanks.

From what I remember it was really not that interesting. For like 50 miles there were billboards advertising South of The Border. When you get there it's a huge letdown.

Also I think they may have closed down in recent years.

If you're not rushing down maybe detour from 95 and hit up Myrtle Beach SC.

Tourist trap?
No rush for us, I plan on taking the coastal route laid out here and only getting on the 95 once we hit N Florida.

Great route! I did this once but on the way back from FL to NY. Stopped at Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach and a few other places before my friend got sick and we jumped back on the 95 to head home.

Hoping to do this again some day except this next time I hope to do the whole thing.

I was there a few years ago and was very disappointed with it, especially after the dramatic buildup that had been happening for hours before hand. Was very run down and nothing to offer aside from souvenirs and being able to take pictures next to over sized "sculptures."

Nice. Any recommendations of things to see/do along that route?

Sounds like a tourist trap. I hate those kinds of places. We'll skip it.

It may be hard after you see all the billboards for most of the way down :)

+1, did this trip 2 years ago. We stopped there, cuz you see it on the signs for hundreds of miles, but then u finally get there, and there is pretty much nothing there.

One thing nice we did was visit the budweiser factory in Jacksonville which is literally right off the I-95. Free drinks for the way ;)

I'm not sure how far out of the way it is but look into the Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel it's this really long bridge tunnel system with amazing views and a rest stop in middle where you can walk around. Here is a link

Nice. Any recommendations of things to see/do along that route?

I did this trip on Pesach 2003 right after this article came out. Unfortunately I don't really remember the details of everywhere we stopped.

The only to places a remember that we stopped were Hilton Head, SC to stop and chill at the beach and then Myrtle Beach, SC.

I guess since I was on the way back from Miami I wasn't really impressed with the beaches since Miami Beach is so much nicer but If you are going the other direction the beaches should get nicer as you move south.

Myrtle Beach was also a little bit of a let down. There is a big tourist area next to the beach that reminds me of Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls. Ripley's Believe it or Not, Haunted Houses, game rooms, etc. Hopefully there are other nice places that you can hit up. I didn't do much research before I went and we just stopped randomly along the way...

Actually in middle of the same trip myself with my wife. Went to Watercountry USA in Williamsburg VA. They have a partnership w Busch Gardens. Dunno if its still available but i got tix for a 1 day pass to the park and it had an option for unlimited visits until Sept 2. plan on going again on the way back north for a couple days, so got 3 admissions to the park for $50 pp. Seemed like a gr8 deal to me.
Also a nice town in North Fla, Old St. Augustine. It's supposedly the oldest town in the continental US or something like that. There is a model of a wooden frigate from Spain that is on a tour around the world docked there as of two weeks ago. Looked pretty cool. Did a helicopter tour over the area for $100 pp, and really enjoyed it.
There was a place I saw on TA to see how to make glass things and you could make your own objects in Baltimore. Didn't have a chance to see it but looked really good and had gr8 reviews.
Buy discounted gift cards from me.
